Today is Independence Day in America, and as I sit in my hotel room in SeaTac (outside of Seattle, Washington), listening to non-stop explosions and firecrackers going off outside in celebration of "independence" and "freedom", I am saddened to think that one out of every 100 Americans are imprisoned and my Canadian husband Marc Emery is among them.
Activism

CANNABIS CULTURE - Imprisoned marijuana activist Marc Emery has been held in solitary confinement in an American prison for unknowingly breaking an apparently unwritten rule by having his wife record a phone conversation for publication as an online podcast, which was never released.

Sometimes it’s hard to wrap our minds around abstract things. Like when everyone said “Free Marc Emery,” but he was free, living in Vancouver. But now when we say “Free Marc Emery,” we are talking about a concrete thing. Marc is no longer free.

I share a cell with Oliver, a Jewish Iranian-Canadian guy (see Jodie Emery's blog entry for more on fellow inmates). It's like North Fraser pretrial centre, concrete & steel, but with a locker. Outside of our cell is the "range" where 60 of us eat, shower, watch Tv and play cards or dominoes or such activities, as well as walking the second level walkways for exercise.
Activism

CANNABIS CULTURE - Supporters of imprisoned marijuana activist Marc Emery showed their support in over 80 cities around the world on SATURDAY MAY 22, 2010 for the Worldwide Rally to Free Marc Emery.

It finally happened. After five years of global activism, protesting, petitioning, and campaigning that most people believed would save Marc Emery from extradition, the Justice Minister of Canada signed the extradition order for my husband.
