Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT), the powerful head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called for the end of mandatory minimum sentencing at both the state and federal levels in comments made last Wednesday. He also said he hoped the federal government would not spend "a great deal of resources" on enforcing marijuana laws in states where it is legal. 
Activism

Hawaii House Speaker Joseph Souki (D-8) Friday introduced a bill to legalize the possession of marijuana by adults and create a system of taxed and regulated legal marijuana commerce. The measure, House Bill 150, would allow people 21 and over to possess up to an ounce and grow an as yet unspecified number of plants in a secure location.
Medical

We are in a complete legal quagmire with medical cannabis law in California. Localities want to allow and tax cannabis, and the federal government is simultaneously trying to destroy anyone providing cannabis in a medical context, all the while claiming it will honor state and local law. Smack-dab in the middle of this debacle is the city of Sacramento.
