CANNABIS CULTURE - A group of medical marijuana patients, producers, and advocates is planning to meet with Members of Parliament, media and other government officials on January 31 in an effort to draw attention to "the serious and unnecessary obstacles that the Harper Government has placed" in the path of medical marijuana users in Canada.

Despite surveys showing a majority of Canadians approve legalizing possession of small amounts of pot, the law isn’t changing any time soon.

Had it not been for the hard work of everyone in lobbying the Senate, C-15 would have passed into law. That's right, we campaigned politically and won! C-15 has been stopped!

Bill C-15 is a government Bill calling for mandatory minimum sentencing for drug crimes, including the possession of one marijuana plant if it is deemed to be for the purpose of trafficking. Libby Davies and the NDP oppose this Bill. Mandatory minimums have been an expensive failure in the United States, divert needed resources from prevention, treatment, and harm reduction measures, and further criminalize what must be recognized as a public health issue.

In the face of increasing gang violence in Canada, Member of Parliament Bill Siksay (Burnaby—Douglas, NDP) called for an end to drug prohibition during members’ statements yesterday. "Alcohol prohibition did not work," he said.
