BEYOND PROHIBITION - Arrests are down across Canada this year and have been declining steadily for the past five years. However, a large chunk of Canadian society is actually being arrested at record levels. Thieves? Nope. Violent predators? Not them either. The group being targeted by police and arrested at all-time highs are those nefarious cannabis users.

6 months ago Massachusetts decriminalized cannabis possession, imposing a $100 fine/citation instead of criminal penalties. Now it appears that police are almost ready to give up issuing the citations because people are simply refusing to pay.

A team of British police raided a 30-year-old man's birthday barbecue because they thought he was throwing a rave. The cops' source of information: Facebook.

Activism

Last week, Dana Beal (an old Yippie friend of mine) and Norman Spinrad (an author who wrote a book that helped to inspire Yippie philosophy) and I were all on the phone together. Norman suggested that with legalization, police around the country would lose jobs, and perhaps measures to make marijuana legal or civilly regulated would be met with less opposition if they were still getting their cut in some way.
