Building a Better Test for Marijuana Edibles

A lot of people know what it’s like to overdo it with marijuana edibles. A new method could make it easier for buyers, sellers, makers and regulators to know just how potent that pot brownie really is.

THC—tetrahydrocannabinol—is the main psychoactive molecule in marijuana. It’s what gets you high. It’s also how edibles in pot shops are labelled; you might buy a bar of chocolate with 60 milligrams of THC, which is somewhere between 4 and 6 doses depending on the person.

That is, the bar should have 60 milligrams. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association last year found that only 17 percent of the edibles the authors tested had accurate THC labelling.
