Ask Ed: Grow Tip – Marijuana Capsules

You can make marijuana capsules from your trim material. They are a good way to ingest marijuana without having to eat “the brownie.”

You can purchase capsules at your local health food store; buy the size most convenient for you to use. I prefer smaller caps because you can always take another one if you aren’t feeling the effects enough and it may be uncomfortable if you ingest too much.

Start by heating trim in an oven or microwave until it is crispy. Next, grind it up. A coffee grinder does a good job. After the blades spin let the dust settle before you open it. Gently move the powder into a bowl and add enough olive oil to it until it has the consistency of cookie dough. Fill the bottom of the capsule using your gloved hand and then cover it with the top half. The caps are ready to enjoy. Try one first.

You can store them for months in the refrigerator.

WARNING: If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, check the label first. Some capsules are made with gelatin, which comes from cows.

    Vaporizers work by using *indirect* heat and the herb is heated up to the temperature where the trichomes start melting and vaporize, but not hot enough to burn the leaf material (which contains green chlorophyll, magnesium, and the source of the harshness of the smoke). You can quick dry in a microwave or an oven, but you have to be careful not to burn your plants when using the oven. Set the oven on low…200 degrees or lower. With the microwave you have to be very careful. Microwaves heat from the inside out–usually not a good idea to use a microwave to dry your stuff out, unless you do it in short bursts (30 seconds in the microwave, a few seconds in the freezer; repeat until herb moisture-free). These quick dry methods produce inferior quality and are only really intended as a way to test fresh harvest potency. Though, after a good cure it will be both better tasting as well as more potent (since you give time for the trichs to age).

    As to Ed’s leaf capsules only having leaf…since he grinds it down he’s probably hoping that these are the smaller cola fan leaves and have lots of sugar coating on them, so could have enough to do the job after put into capsules.

    I believe the key is to get the temp between the range of activation and vaporization. Somewhere in the 300F range would be my best guess… though Ed must have been ripped and forgot to put a temperature on there.

    I am always puzzled by this. If a vaporizer works by heat, why does the good stuff not vanish when heated in micro or oven? Also, how can you feel ANY effect form putting what I would think is a half a leaf into a capsule?

    Herb Should be 100% dry, otherwise shell life is reduced due to oil becoming rancid from bacteria that require water moisture to survive.

    If its strong enough try (silk?) screen or ice hash bag style trichome powder instead of powdered whole trim. (Also must be 100% dry)

    Olive Oil – Moderate Life
    (First Cold Pressed Extra Virgin, best olive oil grade for highest antioxidants and best freshness) make sure to check packaging date or expiry date, if my memory serves me fcpev olive oil normally expires by up to 3 years from production date.
    Olive Oil is great because it is very efficiently metabolized and easily burned for energy, being mostly composed of omega-9 also has good balance of other components if it “extra virgin first cold pressed”.

    Butter Oil also known as Ghee is a traditional eastern “carrier” to carry herbal compounds deep into the body. It should ideally use organic butter. However it is necessary either way to use a salt free (no salt, unsalted, etc.) butter. I can’t remember the exact process it’s been a while since I did it, but generally you melt the butter on a low simmer, curds form and condense from the solution, these must not be allowed to brown so they must be strained and removed and the butter solution free of these particles is then simmered on low until it stops bubbling or something like that, I’m not a 100% and at any rate I know the directions in the book are good and work: The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies by Vasant Lad in Appendix 2 (page 284) How to Prepare and Use Herbs, Ghees, and Oils.
    Storing ghee works because it is kept in an airtight container (glass jar for example) and there is no water moisture or or porus organic tissue which might hold moisture or promote decay, so it can keep indefinately.
    Butter has got butyric acid in it, which is a short chain saturated fatty acid, I think butyric acid has something to do with gamma amino butyric acid, so called GABA neurotransmitter thingy, if you believe in that modern shmodern kind of religion. p.s. The butter oil for sure will provide a good lasting absorption, not itself being burned up quite so readily like all the omega-9 or short chain fatty acid dominant type oils (or omega 3 which itself speeds up metabolism). I think more actual physical components are made out of omega-6 but require omega-3 for the making to take place properly.. so that is where those two kinds go, also omega-3 makes sure you burn up stuff properly (metabolically as is the only way I will use the word burn in this post, unless otherwise specified). I know crappy non-organic poluted butter is no good for omega-3 and not I don’t know about omega-6 in crappy butter, but things like CLA the famed conjugated EFA are naturally present in real grass grazed cows and their milk products and it is consumption of this particular natural source of the CLA that all the studies of benefits are based on, and not magic man made racemic isomer shitmix CLA pills. Also grass grazed cows got good nice yellow-orange carotenes from the grass like I think its really good levels in the spring on fresh pasture. If you are a really big person and you wonder if butter oil is all that good for you, it is fine because were talking about very small amounts here and those are ok for sure but you might be attracted to use another type of oil because of its benefits are more specific to offer you more benefits, but no this small ammount of butter oil is not going to make anyone gain weight because of animal fat.

    Coconut Oil. What more can I say, its the vegan alternative to Ghee. Also has a very good stability.
    By the way oils in general will become much more fluid at warmer temperateres for example in summer or near a heat source (heat vent, stove, very warm room, direct sun etc.) So it is best to keep your capsules in a cool and shady preferably dark place. A vitamin bottle with tight lid and a moisture and oxygen absorber packets is good, in the summer wrap it in the center of some clothing for insulation and throw it in your back pack.
    Back to coconut oil. It is worth mentioning that some coconut oil is deodorized with some kind of “process” may or may not be a chemical step look into it ask the manufacturer if you care. Natural coconut oil smells pleasant and its in a capsule so if it bugs you I doubt youl notice. Okay.. Coconut is made up mostly of Short Chain Saturated Fatty Acid, these do not accumulate in the body but are very efficiently burned into energy, in my experience (and I might be unique maybe I’m the odd one here) If I take lots (and I mean _lots_) of coconut oil compared to lots of olive oil, I will notice the full feeling longer and it (for me) lasts a while longer than olive oil, the other way to look is maybe oilive burns (metabolically I mean, do not smoke it) a little faster compared to coconut. Maybe try a blend? Anyways coconut oil makes a great sun protectant in the summer, not sure if the small amount in one capsule will make too much difference though, but topicall coconut is great for sun screen/tanning oil (cannabis sunscreen anyone? hmm proceed with caution..maybe make it weak potency, duh? not trying to heal anyone here you know, jesus christ and all that brand name faith 😉 Coconut is cooling on your metabolism so again, specially nice in the summer. Coconut fatty acids are also anti-fungal (again helping storage and topical conditions).

    Hemp Seed Oil.
    Okay theres a trick to doing this one right.
    All types of hempseed oil sold are not all of high quality, even if they come in glass and are certified organic (just an example). What you want to look for is one that lists the daily value for Vitamin E (natural in the hempseed oil, not an added substance) to be roughly %120 per 15ml tablespoon. This is the good stuff and is nutritionally intact in other areas as well. Many, and I mean most (I say this whith all the shame in my heart and soul), brands do not handle the oil with enough care for you to get a pristine oil with its many virtues intact. Make sure this one thing the vitamin E level at %120 per 15ml tablespoon is on the label, don’t compromise, other products are not anywhere near as good, there are many other highly valuable subtle components that will also be compromised if the vitamin E is. I have seen things like %8 and %12 commonly, which is %1000 or more less useful and no taking more of inferior hemp oil does not add up to the same benefit, its damaged, period. Look also for small batch or hand processed. Organic is always great too. Hempseed oil is one of the most healing oils available on the planet. Intact quality oil contains numerous tocopherol and tocotrienol complexes, phytosterols, phospholipids, essential fatty acids omega-3 omega-6 gla etc. look it up. EFA’s especially the all important omega-3 if your taking them, need naturally present vitamins like E’s to work correctly and safely. Naturally present Vitamin E complex (tocopherols), tocotrienols and phytosterols work to preserve tissue and help keep muscle volume stable which without them and a high omega 3 can favour excessive oxidation reactions. Got any muscle conditions or skin conditions or allergies or I guess anything at all wrong, better get some of these naturally ocuring substances. So quality counts here more than anywhere else, support companies who produces high grade hempseed oil nature intended. Examples I know of Northcoast Naturals (used to part of PVL bodybuilding supplements/nutrition company, not sure if they still are?), Prarie Emerald (hempoilcan). hempoilcan has some stellar prices on now, I just checked their website. I think the other company gets their oil from these people. Also I can’t be 100% certain because I don’t have the access to the info currently, but I used to use Ruth’s hempseed oil back when it was the main hempseed oil sold here and I remember it was good stuff. Ruth’s softhemp raw shelled seeds were pretty quality on the vitamin E but I can’t be sure what’s up recently since I just don’t know, and their office is closed right now, I’ll try to find out the E thing from them soon. And there may be others not sure what the deal is with OmegaFlow these days either.
    If you use trichomes powder, why not mix half fine hempseed “protein” powder into the trichome and oil “dough” / paste.

    I would not use flax oil as healthy as it might seem because of storage issues and extreemly short shelf life and its extreme tendency to oxidize and believe you me, oxidized or heated flax oil is toxic as hell and is very very bad for you. Never ever consume spoiled, or old flax seed oil. Fresh, properly stored, no sweat but still very short shelf life. You have been warned, and instructed on safe use as well if it pleasures you.

    Rice Bran Oil is another oil that also has some exceptional properties in terms of storage and nutrition. Is very rich in phytosterols as well as naturally present vitamin E complexes (tocopherol, etc.). it has higer content of omega-6 but not as high as hempseed, however hempseed has more omega-3 (critically important) along with the omega-6 whereas rice does not. Rice also can keep for I think a coupleish maybe 3 or so? years from manufacture it is higher in omega-9 the most voluminous component of olive oil, but the rice bran has different antioxidants and also more omega-6, again high quality olive oil also has some omega 3 in there, which is kind of nice of whoever olives got invented.

    Other oils are sometimes commonly used in the east to prepare herbs for various uses. I have seen a certain root herb in a capsule composed of an extract of the herb in peanut oil (arachis oil, as it is listed there, refering to the latin name for peanut). I found those quite effective, maybe worth a try to use the peanut oil if you do, make sure to smell the peanut oil before you use it checking for a peanut smell if it is at all rancid smelling like really old nuts don’t bother your oils has past its better days and can now be used to make a candle somehow I never did it, but im sure its easy enough. Store the oil in a cool, dark and dry place (as with any oil that is not refrigerated or frozen). Peanut oil (arachis oil) should have a relatively golden colour to it and not be pale, I think there is pale peanut oil but it is more chemically processed and inferior. Peanut oil also contains arachidic and or arachidonic acid if my memory is corect and is moderate in omega 6 and 9 as well, arachidonic might be in good ammounts in anchovy oil though I’m a little spotty on which is which of these two at the moment, as you can tell its been some time since I ate either of these. Either way both sources are good for producing the famous 2-AG 2-arachidonyl glycerol, famed for being the endogenous supposed cousin of CBD. Personally I would use only a little peanut with a blend of other oils but, unless you are anaphylactic to peanuts I am sure its okay to use only peanut if you want. I don’t know too many details about other levels of nutrients in peanut oil since it usually comes from far away like asia for the good stuff anyway and I have not asked any of these manufacturers, and unfortunately I’m not fluent in languages that are not European at this point. So not too much specific info nutrient quality wise. If your thinking maybe its a good synergy with cannabis, I think it is, but so is hempseed oil in lots of other ways, seriously, mix and match is a good idea.

    Sort of weird maybe but my dad tell’s me in his home country (and I would only recommend healthy organic animals as the source in north America because there is just too much wrong with industrial animal husbandry to comment on it now and here), they used pork fat, commonly known as lard but do not buy it in a block these have artificial chemical preservatives in them and are not good for you and people who eat these preservatives and smoke pot had bad problems happen in their lungs that people who do not eat the preservatives and smoke pot did not. What you do is some how when you cook the pork the lard (read fat, or oil, or fatty acid) it gets let out of the meat you can pour some of this off and save it, putting it aside for whenever. A glass jar is good. I am guessing you will want it to be free of food particles and once it is I would make sure theres no water moisture left the same way as for Ghee, by gently simmering it on lo-med until there is no bubbling I doubt there is a lot of moisture in it when it comes out of the meat but it will not hurt to be sure so you can store it as safely as possible, water+oil+time=bad. The butter oil is a harder type oil somewhere between butter oil and coconut oil my guess is. From crappy (sorry pigs I know it’s not your fault) I mean crappily raised porks the oil is not really the healthiest but it’s still a million times better than margarine and other artificially processed or modified oils. Again no body is talking about a lard sandwich with a nice refreshing glass of lard to wash it down here, this is some very small capsules. Lard most likely has some good keeping qualities also when prepared with enough love. They, my dad and his family had it in their family that this is what you used for making salves (topical herbal extracts in oil) like calendula flowers.

    Never tried cocoa butter probably works, it is very hard at room temperature would keep well too, I imagine. Harder, denser oils are more heat light radiation and oxygen and chemically and time stable, and also protect your special plant components that have been extracted into them, if you have put any in them that is.

    In reference to MCTs, I’m not sure of the wisdom of consuming altered fractions of oils. The oils I have bentioned here are all very good and useful. To my knowledge and with the knowledge you should have no problem figuring out a mix that works for you. They all work really well and there’s no problem there, but if you really want to make it a little better the info here should be more than enough to enable you to do that which ever way suits your needs best. Mainly I’m not convinced of the wisdom of consuming _only_ MCTs in the absence of other more critical nutrients, since this is inferior nutritionally, maybe it works make it go fast, not sure why you don’t think short chains would go even faster, or hmm?? but if you do consume it this way, I would totally recommend you make sure to get your essential oil related nutrients as well some way.

    Other oils I know of:

    Sunflower – a few brands have moderate vitamin E’s – however there all usually extreemly high in omega-6, so for sure not a first choice if you can buy something else above, but if you can’t get anything else with the naturally present E complexes, a little sunflower oil in the mix can be ok.

    Corn oil = Corn oil should be naturally yellow from the vegetable carrotenoids it contains. Not sure about the overall makeup, not to diss corn for those who worship it but I’m just not positive of its makeup or how that might be affected by modern growing methods. And besides lots of US corn might be infected with Star link genes, not sure how that whole shtik is going these days. But its something to ponder, if you have nothing better to do. Corn is a fine oil though, and I would be willing to use it in a mix other some other stuff, or on its own if that’s what I had available, or was super super tight for cash, as I often am. I think there aren’t too many vegetable oils that come with much carotenes pigments antioxidants in them, but corn has some, I guess you could make a calendula (flowers/petals) oil as well or mix it in or something if you want. Saffron also has some kind of carotenoids, that are related structurally but a bit different in nature, must grind saffron threads to a powder for good release of the pigment, do not use more than a very tiny bit of saffron, as little as three threads could be a lot to flavour and colour up a rice dish for example, also saffron is expensive $5-$20 a gram and is very space and labour intensive to produce. So saffron can give you some colour so can calendula, by the way, if you use calendula, use more than saffron for sure, also calendula can come in a variety of darkness of pigments from pale yellow to rich deep orange, the darker the better. Please do not confuse calendula officinal(is) with so called marigolds, calendula used in herbal medicine is easy to find out about.

    Denser/harder oils are better stabilizers or if you will natural preservatives.
    Hempseed and Ricebran can be great sources of E complex and phytosterols
    Corn oil (yellow) or alternatively calendula added to the mix will give some phyto carotene.
    Olive oil is a good balance between nice makeup of oils, good absorption, good stability and good antioxidant (when fresh and prepared for traditional high quality).

    Olive oils are prepared a number of different ways, you want extra virgin first cold pressed written on the bottle, this means it is an old fashioned pressing without chemicals or solvents and the very first press of the olives produces this grade and is a low heat operation. Other grades may use either high pressure and or friction and or heat and or chemicals and or solvents. Totally pale olive oil is overprocessed and is more or less odor and tasteless also there is virtually no antioxidant value and it may contain traces of solvent residue from the extraction. Pumice oil is made from the dregs and or seeds that are left over from other grades it may or may not be made with solvents. It is better if it is packaged in the country of origin for freshness reasons. Organic is nice.

    Coconut oils are prepared a number of different ways, from traditional heating coconut meat in water over a fire and skimming off oil from the top, to modern extra virgin cold pressed, to chemical methods. So odourless coconut oil might have been specially processed to remove the aroma.

    Rice bran oil is typically processed with expeller pressing and hexane (a solvent) is often used, however most ricebran oils I have seen are of variable but often quite high quality and manufacturers make an effort to maintain high nutrient content in their oils because the nutrients and vitamins the rice bran oil contains in high amounts are a major marketing feature of their products. Unlike much lower grades of highly destructed cheap or grocery brands of certain oils lacking colour flavour aroma and atixodiants like some olive peanut etc. oils. Rice bran oil is moderately heat and storage stable because of the major omega-9 component.

    Soja bean oil. Not too much experience with it but, it is high in phopholipid, good for vitamin e, probably got a bit of omega-3 and a swath more of omega-6, faily good oil overal, not the greatest by any stretch. Sometimes what the growers do is they have a like gene altered mutant called GMO or GE from scary corporations who like to take over the world with it, but sometimes its organic and gmo-free supposedly. Sort of like the corn issue in that sense, again not as good as hempseed, not too special for storage.

    Peanut is pretty highly omega-6, doesn’t store the best, obiously way better than say flax, not sure how its storage would compare to hempseed oil on its own.

    The more chemically refined an oil is the less good it is and the longer it lasts, also chemically modified oils like margarine also can last longer and be harder but are not safe and healthy like the naturally harder oils. Sometimes antioxidants in oils can preserve plant components extracted into the oil, and in the case of cannabis and oil soluble antioxidants they are all oil soluble antioxidants so there is like a connection of your cell membrane’s inner workings and the electron transport chain and through and also to the membrane itself and the outer watery fluids which connects to other water soluble antioxidants like flavonoids and things like that that recycle vitamin c and wash away excess pH charges out of you (in the water). Point is vegetable based oil soluble antioxidants are good cannabis flowers have there own special kind in it and the combination of essential fatty acids, naturally present A (corn,calendula,saffron) and E (hemp,rice) vitamins, arachidic(peanut)/arachidonic(anchovy), gla, omega-6, omega-3 and other oil antioxidants like gamma-oryzanol from rice and and the amazingly wonderful shit mix of antioxidants in good olives, work like some supplementation to enhance the natural endocanabinoids and other related systems in your body like phopholipids (which are connected with methylation cycles, which also goes with B vitamins) which are used to build some endocanabinoids, um, prostaglandins which is just some more stuff related to signals and like also hormones and stuff, and cell membranes coating all cells. Blah blah blah. Indeed.

    Don’t forget hempseed are the best earthbound source of trace minerals pretty much at least as far as most places go on earth, maybe some goji’s got b12 (cobalt amine) or something else like that, not sure about grass. But tons and tons of good stuff everybody needs all in the hempseed. It stands to reason with a surpluss of nutrients hempseed is best and most efficiently equipped to meet higher nutritional requirements of good health or a taxed system hungering to recover, then you ice the cake with some good old flower supplements and bingo presto, alex is your cat, mom’s the word, wowie zowie, don’t forget your fruits and or roots and you’ll be as set as a stool pigeon. Better stop using old slang and quit being manic about hemp’s helping healing hands and smoke myself back under control.

    Oh yes verily, it is the caviar of the earth. For the sea, you see, is lost to me. And it is time, as always and ever it will be to give this wonderous gift for free. If its not truth its history.

    One other thing do not heat hempseed oil or sunflower oil.

    butter oil, coconut oil, and pork oil, cocoa butter can all handle it, you don’t want to use raw butter because there is moisture in it and your capsules wont keep very long that way. olive oil, rice oil, peanut oil, corn oil, can handle a little warmth don’t over do it, if the oil smells bad from heating before adding plant matter then it is bad, also if it smokes this is very bad, do not use anymore use fresh oil and less heat next time.

    Keeping pot in a bag or jar that has some air leaking out will dry it out after a while if you don’t cook up a storm or have some other mysterious source of humidity in your place. Sometimes I keep it in my pocket, and it dries out after a while especially when the bag can breath body heat plus air equals dry, with less heat than an oven, I would never nuke your herb unless there’s no other choice.

    You do not need much heat to give oral cannabis effective qualities, I have made an olive oil recipe that just take 100% dry trim (easiest way to dry is to just separate the pieces so they don’t touch or at least there’s enough air around them so they don’t mold and just let them set till they’re dry, the smaller pieces dry quicker so if speed is an issue chop it up a little and spread it out thinly, boom dry no time, its like that. Anyway. Get a canning jar, place dry trim, then pour some top notch olive oil in all over it covering the herb. Do be honest I like using the trim pieces as big as I can keep them, because it makes straining later on, or pouring out a particle free oil a lot easier and cleaner. Put a tight lid on that sucker, and let it sit, I use a barely warm location, somewhere outta sight like beside a heat vent or something like that, maybe a cupboard next to the stove, or what have you, I wouldn’t keep it close to microwaves but hey maybe it makes them better who knows right? Radioactive green ooze anyone, its medicinal.. but for sure the oil was so good a few months later. Oh yeah, give it a little swish shake slosh around here and there maybe once a week if you think of it. I like low heat because it will given adequate time convert everything yummy, but also preserves a lot of other stuff that higher temperatures might not, so its the best of both worlds, yo. I used to take a table spoon or sometimes a teaspoon even, on bread, on salad, on rice (after its cooked, no need to cook the specially made oil, its allready maximally potent cooking is not going to improve it after it has already matured in low heat long enough). just straight with a spoon wash it down with something or take it as a “spoon full of medicine, helps the medicine go down”.. I would not put this olive oil mix in direct full sun or somewhere overly warm for it will not last long in such a place, the olive oil will take on a kind of bad taste from excessive heat, which is another reason I usually don’t cook with it since I sometimes cook at much higher temperatures and am not the skill master with the skillet.

    I would take that there olive oil, and I would be so nicely grounded with such a strong nice solid good feeling in my body, but not in anyway overwhelming to the brain just really easy on the head, not no effect, but just a really mellow and clear at the same time. Then if I need it, just take a little bit to smoke or vaporize and it was just perfect as possible, nice good steady long lasting effect but again not unbalanced. Note: I may be biased it was from blueberry X rhino.

    Olive oil is fine though for heating if you are careful with the heat level and short and sweet and just gentle enough with your cooking techniques. Especially with baking because there’s plenty of insulation from the batter or whatever your making shielding most of it from direct heat, better yet you can bake something without it getting too crispy. Your awesome now. Okay you were always awesome before too. Peace out.

    Ed’s just advocating an easy way to recycle trimmings, akin to taking resin scrapings and putting them in a capsule. Though, heating up the leaf in the oven or microwave (especially the microwave!) will cause damage to the trichomes (microwaves will cause many of the trichomes to explode from the inside-out!) You slow cook in oil just to extract the “good stuff” and then you can use that in the same kind of capsules Ed’s talking about here or you can cook with the hemp-flower-oil. I think there’s a better use of trimmings…make hash! All you need is a blender, some ice, a jar of ice cold water, a coffee filter, and a little time. Blend the leave up with water and ice, put into a jar, shake up the jar, fill up with more water and ice (keep it COLD) and put in fridge. Let everything settle (debris floats to the top and the “good stuff” settles on the bottom, along with a little chlorophyll (giving it a green tint). Remove the debris on top and then pour everything through the coffee filter. Squeeze the moisture out of the coffee filter and then put in oven under low heat, microwave (at 30 second increments, alternating between microwave and freezer to keep it cool and to prevent trich degrading). Once dry, load into your favorite medical device and enjoy.

    I thought you had to heat up the stuff, like slow cook it in oil for it to be effective. ie, you cant just eat plain dry trim and get buzzed, it has to be cooked in oil then the oil gets ingested and messes you up.
