Libby Davies and 12 of her NDP Colleagues sent the following letter to Canada's Public Safety Minister, calling for action to ensure Marc Emery can serve his sentence in Canada.

CANNABIS CULTURE - Dana Larsen, organizer of End Prohibition, an 800-strong organization within the NDP membership, has been banned from the annual NDP convention this weekend at the Halifax Convention Center.

Bill C-15 is a government Bill calling for mandatory minimum sentencing for drug crimes, including the possession of one marijuana plant if it is deemed to be for the purpose of trafficking. Libby Davies and the NDP oppose this Bill. Mandatory minimums have been an expensive failure in the United States, divert needed resources from prevention, treatment, and harm reduction measures, and further criminalize what must be recognized as a public health issue.
Activism

Jack Layton, the leader of the federal New Democrats, whom many of you may remember as the man who sat in Marc Emery's house and referred to marijuana as "a wonderful substance" that ought to be legalized, today said his party is not in favour of legalization (on CKNW radio, 9:05-9:30, Bill Good show).
