Hemp BC, our original retail store that opened on July 2nd, 1994 at 324 West Hastings Street in Vancouver, launched the first cannabis website in the world on September 30th, 1994. The World Wide Web had gone live in August of 1994, and now web sites could actually be created and put "online". In fact, our launch party for Hemp BC was shared at a location where our Hemp BC site was 'launched' in tandem with CBC.ca, Canada's largest national TV and Radio network.

This is a story about how I was with Dennis Peron at a pivotal moment in the 1996 campaign for proposition 215 in California, even though Dennis was actually in Vancouver. He had been invited up to participate with me in a protest and commemoration of an anti-pot police brutality incident that had happened twenty-five years earlier.

CANNABIS CULTURE - Many are posting around the news that Easter falls on 4/20 this year, with photos of goofy bunny rabbits smoking joints, an abomination even worse than St. Patrick's day being reduced to a day to chug green beer and get sick, or violent.

The biggest celebration day in the cannabis culture is April 20. The April 20 (4/20) celebration originally started in the mid 1970s as the time of day after school, 4:20 pm, for high school students in San Rafael, California to meet to smoke pot. The phrase "I'll see at you at 4:20" became code for, "I'll be there to smoke a joint with you after classes are over".

CANNABIS CULTURE - The story of the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812 is deeply intertwined with the story of cannabis hemp. For centuries, Russia was the world's largest producer of cannabis textiles. Despite Canada's growing number of cannabis farms and mills, in the early 1800's Britain's mighty navy was still mainly dependent on cannabis rope and sails made in Russia.
Arts & Entertainment

CANNABIS CULTURE - It’s a tough job making a film about drugs in 2012. Over the last half century no substance has been more idealized or demonized than LSD. It’s been associated with everything from ‘delivering God in a capsule’ to destroying the fabric of Western society. Spend a little time researching LSD and you’ll find that very few people sit on the fence when it comes to this immensely powerful and influential hallucinogen.
