During a recent interview with The Daily Beast to discuss his new film “5 Flights Up,” Morgan Freeman told the publication how marijuana has helped him to deal with pain he still struggles with after surviving a near-fatal car crash in Mississippi seven years ago.
In case you don’t remember, Freeman was driving down a highway in 2008 when his car skidded off the road and flipped over several times. The Oscar-winning actor had to be rescued using the Jaws of Life before he was medevaced to a hospital in Memphis. The accident left him with a shattered shoulder, arm, and elbow. Doctors operated for four hours trying to repair damaged nerves in his arms. He still doesn’t have full use of his left hand and he wears a special glove to prevent blood pooling.
A longtime user of marijuana, Freeman had this to say about legalizing it.
“They used to say, ‘You smoke that stuff, boy, you get hooked!” says a chuckling Freeman. “My first wife got me into it many years ago. How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it! This movement is really a long time coming, and it’s getting legs—longer legs. Now, the thrust is understanding that alcohol has no real medicinal use. Maybe if you have one drink it’ll quiet you down, but two or three and you’re fucked.”
