The ninth annual Toronto Hash Mob marijuana legalization rally returns to YD Square Monday Apr. 20 promising more stoner satire, comedic antics and cannabis inhalation than ever before. The activist group has successfully used stoner showmanship to raise awareness to the harms cannabis prohibition has created for over a decade.
“I like to think we have developed to become prohibitionist performance artists,” says THM co-founder Matt Mernagh.
“Pot prohibition absurdity pretty much has the material write itself. You can’t make up a Canadian pensioner caught growing some cannabis and sentenced to six months jail time because of mandatory minimums.”
For the past three years Yonge and Dundas Square staff have assisted organizer Chris Goodwin in creating an event (420 Comedy Festival) suitable for protest attendance numbers. What started as a little protest against prohibition has grown to a 12,000+ strong event requiring much more than megaphones and a makeshift sound system operating on a generator.
Toronto Hash Mob will march from Yonge and Charles (Vapor Central) to YD Square on Monday Apr 20 at 11 a.m. to protest prohibition with 24 cannabis flag honor guard, a marching band and a 9ft prop joint.
