Marc Emery’s US Federal Prison blog #3

I’ve been busy today (Friday, May 28th). I got up at 5:30am as usual, started reading “Parting the Waves”, the Martin Luther King and civil rights movement story. Excellent book. My day is the same thing over & over again each day: I read, I write, I eat poor food, I see no sun and feel no fresh air and can’t sleep, its like Groundhog Day (the movie) unless I get stuff in the mail, or photos, or articles, or anything that has some substance that changes my day.

Had a physical exam at the doctor. Then I got interviewed by US Immigration for my return to Canada, whenever that happens. I’m going through media withdrawal, so I hope people send me updates about the outside world. It’s very isolating and boring here.

(Please click here to send Marc mail!)

I did a second interview with Robert Henry, my subject for the piece I’m writing (he’s an African-American prisoner whose life of hell started when he was forced to go to Vietnam at 18 years of age). That’s exhausting, but I’m doing a thorough job documenting his life story. I’m also moving along with my book report on the book “Worse Than Slavery”. I got 4 more letters today from supporters, so I have 8 to answer to. I got the Buddy Guy book “Damn right I got the blues”, that’s great.

I wish I had more articles where Jodie or supporters are quoted saying something profound or pro-freedom about me. I hate reading these articles that say I made millions – I didn’t make squat. The business sold over a million in 4 of the 10 years in sales, but of course, I didn’t keep any of that. Can’t anyone get quoted saying that? I’m so frustrated today. That just annoyed me. Again, there’s no journalism anymore, just reporting.

My meatless diet has started but aye-yie-yie, it’s bad stuff so far. I’m a little crusty and groggy from lack of sleep.

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

It’s 6am on Saturday morning. I didn’t sleep at all but I’m going back to sleep in about an hour because I’m foggy brained. At least I hope I can nap or sleep.

[Hours later] I slept very soundly from 7am to 10:30am. I made an eye mask with a sock and a twist tie, and that really helped. I need a shower but the showers don’t come on till 1:30pm since I missed the morning shower period. I am getting some Orange Spice tea from commissary next Tuesday. For breakfast I had corn flakes and no-fat (no hormone) milk and two oranges, for lunch a vegetarian sloppy joe (which was fine) plus potatoes. I usually make tuna salad sandwiches each day as well, so food is not a problem (I’m on the no-flesh diet now) even if its dubious flavour/quality.

A new guy came in to our range today, and there was a bit of a weird scene when he chased away a black guy from our table and then said to me pointedly “We don’t eat with OTHER people”. I went “What?” “WE DON’T EAT WITH OTHER PEOPLE,” he reiterated. I deliberately looked at him again and said “What!?” and he repeated “WE DON’T EAT WITH OTHER PEOPLE” and I know he means black people, so Jackson (a black guy) gets up and leaves, and I say, “don’t get up, Jackson, come back here”. But then, Oliver (my cell mate or “cellie” as they are called, he’s Jewish) and I get up and go eat with Bear and Robert, two black guys, and they let Oliver & I sit with them. (Robert, who’s black, had the same kind of experience when a black guy came up to him and said “we stick with our own” after seeing me play dominoes a lot with him).

The hot-headed new white guy has a swastika on his arm, which makes Oliver feel uneasy (needless to say), and this new guy is always angry. He’s been in penitentiaries where he says it is segregated by race, and that this is the only place he knows that is this way (not strictly race-segregated). Meanwhile I’m carrying my civil rights history book around with me, which is all about the desegregation movement. If where I end up is segregated, fine, but it’s weird to me.

I’m very disappointed in everyone who is opposed to the California legalization initiative. All that anti-legalization stuff is coming from medical marijuana growers and profiteers who rightly fear prices will plummet and no one will have to buy their pot anymore. It’s just a lobby to protect their black market. The areas of contention are that the legalization initiative says no public smoking (like the law is now, so no difference!) and it doesn’t exempt 18 to 21-year-olds (again, that’s how the law is now, but at least adults are FREE from imprisonment!). It does not usurp or alter anything in Proposition 215, which is California state law and the force behind the massive medical marijuana movement there. If every citizen of California can grow 25 square feet of cannabis in their home or backyard, there goes the privileged black market backing the anti-legalization campaign, and that’s why some people are opposed to it. Imagine that! Self-proclaimed cannabis activists working AGAINST legalization!

Jodie gets down sometimes because of all the world’s problems that need solving and that she feels she needs to take care of, but my advice is to not be cynical about the state of the world. The world always looks like its on the edge of doom, from any era or any year or date. World wars, wars, disasters, government control & dictatorship, etc., it’s always been there. The reason the planet doesn’t get sucked into the abyss is because great individuals bring us technology (like Blackberry, iPod, iPhone, plasma screens, stoves & fridges and electrical appliances that cost $30 to run for everything for one month – that’s a miracle!) and individual liberty through vigilant defiance of the trends of tyranny.

Without people like us who take a stand, the world would already be a prison everywhere. Sometimes there is a price to pay, but even here in prison, so far I am fairly free to say and write what I want because of the work of others before us who were willing to suffer to promote individual freedom. The forces of tyranny are always well-armed and well-insinuated into the political establishment, but as I say, if it weren’t for Nazis in positions of power, what the hell would we do for a career? Fighting for freedom is the only worthwhile life mission.

Even though I’m very busy with reading and writing, it’s as boring here as you could possibly imagine. It’s lonely in the sense that my life is with Jodie. She and I do everything together 24/7, for years now, and I love and miss that… It is so anti-life here, it’s a prison for sure.

B.C. Mounties have busted what amounts to a marijuana grow op on steroids — 23,000 plants, some measuring as tall as a teenager.

The RCMP say officers had been monitoring Carpenter Lake near Lillooet, northeast of Vancouver, since last year after seeing some suspicious activities on the lake.

When they checked again last weekend they spotted marijuana plants growing along the shore and eventually found a total of 23,000 plants ranging up to 1.5 metres in height.

The massive outdoor grow operation was on Crown land and included a sophisticated watering system with pumps, gravity fed water lines and kilometres of hoses.

Police say the plants were mature and would likely have been harvested within the next few weeks.

No one was on the property at the time and no arrests have been made but the RCMP say they are still investigating.

His comment that the world is ‘run by Nazis’ doesn’t do him much good. The truth is that no group today acts as unethically as the Nazis did in the 1940s, so suggesting that the anti-cannabis people are Nazis, or that the US and Canadian governments are run by Nazis and have Nazi-like agendas, does little (if any) good because it’s so false. Maybe I’ll mail the guy and tell him: some people think pot cause brain damage because conservatives freak out when they use it… their freak-out stories fuel falsehoods… the problem comes from ignorance about pot-effects, not from the Nazis in 2010.

Marc, You are a living legend and when you are long gone off this planet and go back to where you are really from, you will never be forgotten for the sacrifices and courage you have to stand up for the rights that all humans beings should have. I live in CA and see first hand the hypocrite owners of collectives and dispensaries as well as growers that will be happy to see Cannabis maintained as an illegal substance. Its so sad they will call themselves advocates but only want it to maintained as a MEDICINAL substance rather than something that can be used for all if one decides to exercise their own god given right to do so. Just last week I was speaking to a well known owner of two collectives in the Orange County area, we started discussing the initiative and from the get go of the conversation you could see his bias on not wanting the initiative to pass. He stated things like, “stoners are lazy and wont get up and vote, there are too many Mormon right winged conservatives that wont let this happen!” And I am thinking to myself, there are just alot of misinformed ignorant people that need to be educated! And instead of this guy wanting to educate he would rather want people to maintain thier uneducated and ignorant stance on Cannabis! How can one justify consuming cigarettes and Alcohol, but look at cannabis as something way more harmful and in a different class? I then went on to tell him that Im sure you as a collective owner, dont want the initiative to pass! Cuz you are making amazing revenue right now, so much he even stated that he was purchasing his own building in the Indland Empire! He was sick of the threat from local zoning laws and landlords that could ultimately ruin his business! In ca you can operate as a collective but cant make a profit! This guy is breaking that law in every way, but he is sly about it, and personally one should be able to make as much as they can in a business environment. This guy is such a hypocrite, that he opened these centers to help and in the end its to get wealth, and he would rather see money in his wallet then campaign against tyranny that puts good decent people in prison and jail everyday!!!! As for the growers up north, all 10,000 of you!! You aren’t even going to make up a majority of the vote at all, your group cant and wont make any significance on the outcome in NOV. Its sad that your ancestors fled to that area to be able to practice freedom and live their life without fear to do what they want when they want. I understand you all have families to feed, but so do I?! I cant do that from behind bars, nor could you! All they have to do is legitimize their business now, you will have to adapt, so the serious growers will have to compete for business as it should be! COME on, they grow from 3 months out of the year and make 100K cash! Its time bring this industry out of the black market and regulate it! Just like you Marc I am ashamed of so many of my fellow Californians that are against this cause all the while they are raking in enormous profits! I just cant believe these people can justify a fat wallet at the expense of broken homes and families, senseless murders, unjust incarcerations, crime filled communities directly associated with the illegality of cannabis, corrupt law enforcement that take advantage of this prohibition, etc….the list goes on, and their response is, “well i got kids to feed, i have bills to pay!” So do I mother fuckers, but never will I be against something that harms innocence, children and my fellow humans the way prohibition does! I Cant stand these people and in NOV its my wish this happens, for all the hard work CC has done, for all your hard work MARC, it will not be in VEIN, you and I know this. The world is waking up, its a sleeping giant of purity that is being drugged by the prohibitionist to stay sleeping and submissive. I am doing all i can to educate and ensure the passing of this initiative, i know how important this could be to make sure this passes! Once this does the world will change for the better, other states will follow, then our government and governments and other nations of the world! You are loved and adored Marc, you are special, and I know you are not from this planet, it takes one to know one!

True Marc we can say and write as we wish because of the work by others before us,this is so true just look at the amount of times the RCMP have came to my home and harassed me for the things I have said at my blog.

I had to remove it from the public eye untill I have completed it,they are trying to stop me from telling the world how they persecuted me.

They follow me around the internet as I try to tell my story and as soon as I say something that they can make sound like I am insane and gonna cause harm they send the mental health with the police so they can convince my parents and wife I am a danger.

Again marc it is character assasination aimed at discrediting me anything to convince the people in my community that the accusations I am making are not true.

Knowing the ministry for children and the RCMP were using the foster boy I had in my care as a means of spying on me and keeping tabs on me makes me very angry.

I get even more angry when they all sit back and pretend it was all in my head and am insane and destroy me as they use it as a way to escape punishment for what they did to me.

And yes Mr Harper and the conservatives and the opposition know all I am saying is true because “AMERICA” is behind it all and that is why they and the media will not talk to me at all.

They are all being forced to keep quite and allow my persecution to continue because once again the evil MAN is trying to convince the people I am something I am not.

Like yesterday when I explain here at this saite about how I am coming to collect “SLOWLY BUT SURELY” from these people.

I am really surprised the cops and the mental health didn’t knock on my door because they think it means I am coming to get them with violencelol.

In the opinion of these littel Hitlers I should not be allowed to come here or anywhere on the net to tell my story so yes it is indeed the hard work that other have done before us.

So true it is Marc you are behind bars but you still have freedoms others have fought hard for and we should allways remember that.

  20. Bill Harris on

One need not travel to China to find indigenous cultures lacking human rights. America leads the world in percentile behind bars, thanks to the ongoing open season on hippies, commies, and non-whites in the war on drugs. Cops get good performance reviews for shooting fish in a barrel. If we’re all about spreading liberty abroad, then why mix the message at home? Peace on the home front would enhance global credibility.

The drug czar’s Rx for prison fodder costs dearly, as lives are flushed down expensive tubes. My shaman’s second opinion is that psychoactive plants are God’s gift. Behold, it’s all good. When Eve ate the apple, she knew a good apple, and an evil prohibition. Canadian Marc Emery is being extradited to prison for helping American farmers reduce U. S. demand for Mexican pot.

The CSA (Controlled Substances Act of 1970) reincarnates Al Capone, endangers homeland security, and throws good money after bad. Fiscal policy burns tax dollars to root out the number-one cash crop in the land, instead of taxing sales. Society rejected the plague of prohibition, but it mutated. Apparently, SWAT teams don’t need no stinking amendment.

Nixon passed the CSA on the false assurance that the Schafer Commission would later justify criminalizing his enemies, but he underestimated Schafer’s integrity. No amendments can assure due process under an anti-science law without due process itself. Psychology hailed the breakthrough potential of LSD, until the CSA shut down research, and pronounced that marijuana has no medical use. Former U.K. chief drugs advisor Prof. Nutt was sacked for revealing that non-smoked cannabis intake is scientifically healthy.

The RFRA (Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993) allows Native American Church members to eat peyote, which functions like LSD. Americans shouldn’t need a specific church membership or an act of Congress to obtain their birthright freedom of religion. God’s children’s free exercise of religious liberty may include entheogen sacraments to mediate communion with their maker.

Freedom of speech presupposes freedom of thought. The Constitution doesn’t enumerate any governmental power to embargo diverse states of mind. How and when did government usurp this power to coerce conformity? The Mayflower sailed to escape coerced conformity. Legislators who would limit cognitive liberty lack jurisdiction.

Common-law holds that adults are the legal owners of their own bodies. The Founding Fathers undersigned that the right to the pursuit of happiness is inalienable. Socrates said to know your self. Mortal lawmakers should not presume to thwart the intelligent design that molecular keys unlock spiritual doors. Persons who appreciate their own free choice of path in life should tolerate seekers’ self-exploration. Liberty is prerequisite for tracking drug-use intentions and outcomes.

  21. David Malmo-Levine on

Marc I would be careful to first read Dragonfly De la Luz’s analysis of the initiative. The devil is in the details and I truly believe more people will be arrested under the new initiative than are currently being arrested now … the initiative sets up new felonies that have never existed before, and one only needs to revisit the history of decrim to know that police always take full advantage of changes in the law disguised as reform … there will be more felony charges and the number of people legally allowed to take part in the cannabis economy will be shrunk down from hundreds of thousands to a handful of people lucky enough to have a license to dispense or grow for the dispensaries.

Maybe Jodie can play this audio for you over the phone or something … it’s Dennis Peron arguing that the initiative is bad for the movement … he doesn’t speak out of greed but rather a genuine concern for his fellow cannabis users, growers and dealers:

First off, may your days be quick and your mind free. Know you are supported and loved by many, and, ultimately, your safety is primarily in your hands.

Wondering where you are? Sheridan FDC? Seatac MCC? Not that it matters and you probably already have said. Eventually, you’ll be sent to your parent institution and will find time won’t drag so much. Perhaps Arizona, or, eventually, Oakdale LA. Unless they changed, Arizona is/was the only minimum-in institution in the west and your detainer won’t allow open custody (camps). Either way, what I found beneficial was to look to the truth in people, to see past their fears and masks. Not many are there trying to make a statement, nor do they have support of others; their situation can make them explosive.

As for treaty transfers, I worked with Cyndi ***-*** at the Canadian Consulate in Seattle years ago. I believe she’s still there. Though I never pursued it in the end, the average time frame that I was given was 18 to 24 months. The delays were said to be contributed to the US state department, not appreciative of the grace given to Canadians (early release). Today, with the fiscal woes and overcrowding, the US government is happy to expedite transfers. Word is it’s the Canadian government that slows down the process now. No reason was given as to why. If it’s a money thing, perhaps one could offer to reimburse the Correctional Service Canada for the cost of incarceration.

All the best, stay safe and remember we all get out at some point. Today, I truly appreciate the fact that I’m a free Canadian.
