Square pots

I am wondering if I should use square pots so that I could fit them closer together and have more plants? Is this a good idea or do square pots inhibit growth and proper root formation?

Square pots will not get the plants closer together. For instance 6″ square and round containers occupy the same perimeter. However, square pots hold more planting mix than round pots. Thus they give the plants more space to grow. More space for the roots translates into more growth for the upper plant.

The shape of the container will not hurt the roots. They will continue to pack the container.
