Garry McCarthy Considers No Jail Time for Petty Marijuana Offenses

Soon, people caught with small amounts of marijuana in Chicago may avoid jail time.

Over the weekend Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy hinted that people busted for smoking pot may only get a ticket.

His comments came after a plea from some Cook County leaders, including Board President Toni Preckinkle, who said the marijuana arrests are clogging up the jail.

McCarthy said instead of jailing people for small marijuana offenses, police might issue citations or summons.

McCarthy said he’s been talking about the idea with Mayor Rahm Emanuel since May.

The superintendent said he wants petty pot busts to be dealt with quickly so his officers can get back on the street faster to deal with more serious crimes.
