On June 14, the top leaders of the Catholic Church in New York demanded drug law reform, calling mandatory minimum sentences “ineffective and unduly restrictive.” In a letter to Governor George Pataki and the Legislature, Archbishop John Cardinal O’Connor and the Roman Catholic Bishops of New York criticized the 26-year-old Rockefeller drug laws for mandating prison terms without considering offenders’ personal circumstances. The bishops also advocated more treatment options for nonviolent drug offenders.![]()
