Letter to The Young Turks: Proof that Marijuana Smoking Does Not Lead to Lung Cancer

Dear Young Turks,

My name is David Malmo-Levine and I write for Cannabis Culture online magazine.

Recently, on your show, Cenk said, “if you smoke it very consistently for a long long period of time you can get lung disease … and maybe even lung cancer, as you would from smoking cigarettes.”

Watch the video clip of The Young Turks:

The facts say the opposite of this:

From Erowid’s “Marijuana Myths”:

There are no epidemiological or aggregate clinical data suggesting that marijuana-only smokers develop lung cancer.

You’d think it would have been very big news in June 2005 when UCLA medical school professor Donald Tashkin reported that components of marijuana smoke – although they damage cells in respiratory tissue – somehow prevent them from becoming malignant. In other words, something in marijuana exerts an anti-cancer effect!

There has never been a documented case of lung cancer in a marijuana-only smoker, and recent studies show that pot use is not associated with any type of cancer.

From the article “Cannabis and Lung Cancer” by Martin Martinez:

I attended the 1st National Clinical Conference on Medical Marijuana in Iowa in 1998. Arguably the most learned man on the subject of the effects of smoke on the lungs is named Donald Tashkin, Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care, at UCLA. He spoke for almost an hour at the Conference, showing slides of smoke-browned lungs. He showed how marijuana smoke seems to push pollutants towards the outer lining of the lungs.

His presentation did not portray marijuana smoke as harmless, but there was no solid evidence of disease associated with the browning of the lungs’ outer lining. Donald Tashkin has conducted the most extensive research involving the largest number of long-term marijuana-only smokers, as well as multi-drug smokers–marijuana, tobacco, cocaine, and other substances, for several decades. His critique of marijuana smoke was completely non-committal. (Considering the government is his largest source of funding, there is little doubt why his lecture at the first medical cannabis conference was short and unsupportive.)

When Dr. Tashkin finished his speech, he did not wait to answer questions. He grabbed his materials and bolted for the door. I raced after him and stopped him on the steps outside the conference hall. I showed him the passages I had written about his research in The New Prescription. I stood there and watched him read everything I had written about his work. He agreed that my synopsis was correct. Then I asked him the $64,000 question. I said, “Do you know of any cases of marijuana-only smokers who had lung cancer?” He said “Yes, there is one.” Then he smiled, explaining, “He was sixteen years old.” We both smiled, knowing a teenager could not possibly have sufficient exposure to marijuana smoke to cause lung cancer–his cancer was clearly due to some other cause.

From the book The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer

The Single Most Inportant Fact: Not One Recorded Case of Lung Cancer Linked to Cannabis

We have interviewed Dr. Tashkin numerous times. In 1986 I asked him about an article he was preparing for submission to the New England Journal of Medicine, indicating that cannabis smoking caused as many or more pre-cancerous lesions as tobacco in “equal” ammounts.

Most people do not realize, nor are the media told, that a pre-cancerous lesion is any tissue abnormality; abrasion, eruption, or redness. Unlike the radioactive lesions caused by tobacco, the THC-related lesions contain no radioactivity.

We asked Tashkin how many people had gone on to get lung cancer in these studies — or any other studies on long-term smokers like Rastas, Coptics, etc.?

Dr. Tashkin, sitting his UCLA laboratory, looked at me and said, “Well, that’s the strange part. So far no one we’ve studied has gone on to get lung cancer.”

“Was this reported to the press in the article?”

“Well, it’s in the article,” Dr. Tashkin said in passing, “but no one in the press even asked. They just assumed the worst.” His answer to us was still that not one single case of lung cancer in someone who only smoked cannabis has ever been reported. It should be remembered that he and other doctors had predicted 20 years ago, their certainty that hundreds of thousands of marijuana smokers would by now (1997) have developed lung cancer.

Read more info on cannabis and cancer.

Read more info on tobacco and radioactive fertilizers that cause cancer.

I hope this evidence will compel Cenk to retract his statement about cannabis possibly causing lung cancer, or at least be factually correct about the issue in the future. If anything, the evidence shows that cannabis may protect people from lung cancer, not cause it.

    Here is Why:
The reason why it increases lung capacity is because as people exhale and inhale the hit to their maximum lung capacity, their lung is still releasing deoxygenated blood gasses into your lungs which are increasing the lung’s capacities by minuscule amounts slowly.

Over time this makes a big impact as social development of the habit continues.

As the marijuana user challenges their peers to pride their ego and see who can hold it the longest and who can inhale the most. There is a constant ritual among the marijuana smoking communities called “ghosting”. The longer they hold it, the higher chance they have of absorbing so much gas that they no longer see the smoke as they exhale, hence; ‘ghosting’.

These types of rituals are uncommon among tobacco smokers, these people enjoy smoking a pack a day on average, spending their time inhaling smoke more commonly and of a more dangerous nature.

Marijuana cannot cause lung cancer. It is contrary to all scientific evidence, as one piece of information look up run from the cure on google by Rick Simpson. Enjoy.

“Now that we’re beyond that we can work to denounce so called decrim.”

    We?

    I wrote this article:

    cannabisculture.com/v2/content/descriminalization-decrim-myths-decrim-facts

What have you done? When are you going to start your “work”?

“This is what losing a debate looks like. Cheap ad hominem, no point to it other than attack.”

I’m just honest about calling bullshit bullshit. Attacking the “person” would be to call you a bullshitter. When I hear bullshit I call it that – and I’m not afraid to say it was me, David Malmo-Levine – who feels that way. And pointing out your cowardice isn’t an attack, it’s just an observation. There are lots of people too scared to put their name to their critiques of others … it’s a common problem on the internet. Think of it as helpful advice from someone who wishes you to find your intestinal fortitude and come out of the closet as a cannabis activist. Someone as wise as yourself shouldn’t be ashamed or afraid to show the world how you feel about the way the movement should proceed. In fact, you should probably not limit your activism to giving advice in some reply section of my articles, but rather spring into action yourself and follow your own advice and carry out the tasks you are attempting to give me. “Lead by example”. I am sure that, once you locate your spine and grow a pair, the rest will be easy.

“The way you’re flying off your rocker, if you did know who I am you’d probably start harassing me at all hours.”

If I knew you I could better diagnose where your psychological problems originate.

“Nah you’d just cash your paycheck for writing bullshit, like you do now.”

I write for free. I make my modest income buying and selling artwork. What do you do for a living? Or are you too scared to say?

“If you wrote what I do you’d be able to have some pride in your ability.”

If I wrote what you did I’d commit suicide immediately.

    “Name dropping.”

I’m just pointing out that both the dictionary definition of “potent” and the common usage applies to budder. I cited a half-dozen sources, Pete Brady being only one. You, so far, have provided exactly zero sources of your unique definition of potency, and are covering up that fact by pretending that my providing context is somehow “name dropping”. I’m quite certain that term does not mean what you think it means.

“Paper credentials can be in order but it doesn’t mean he’s an actual authority on the issue.”

So who is an authority on the issue. Please provide quotes in context, as I have.

“You judge that instead by the caliber of their body of work on that exact issue. I mentioned two people who are but did you bother to ask them or did you just go on the attack about anonymous chicken shits.”

I’m waiting for you to supply someone who has published on the matter. It’s one thing to hold an opinion in private, it’s another to put your name next to it in public.

Raising concerns is not the same as “making shit up”.

Exactly. You’re making shit up about there being nothing about concentrates in RMLW – you just admitted to doing so when you wrote “But that clause is good news.” above.

“But having a discussion with you is like having a discussion with an apple fanboy. No critical thought process at play, just fanaticism.”

Thanks … THAT was an example of an ad hominem attack. Here’s the difference between your actual attack and my observation. I have evidence you’re chickenshit – you refuse to reveal your identity. Your attack is subjective – it’s your opinion that I’ve provided no critical thought process … and yet I’ve responded directly to what you say, line by line, with evidence whenever the situation requires it. Your attack on me is baseless, and mine on you is justified.

    “Its potency?
    You really think that’s impossible?
    1. I know how to use search engines.
    2. I could write one.
    3. I could ghostwrite dozens of them.”

But you couldn’t make it look like it existed before this discussion we are having now. The evidence I’ve provided is dated and existed before we began this discussion.

“That’s where you jumped into the branson boat, in your attempt to defend that idiocy.”

Quote my actual words to me, so I know what you are talking about.

“Branson isn’t worried that people will blow themselves up or ingest adulterants in skunk, he’s saying that skunk is “something else” that’s dangerous because of its potent concentration of thc that makes it a deadly new drug. This is ignorant of reason. You get such concentrations just by vaporizing weaker drugs, or making various other concentrates that are illegal in canada.”

I’ve never called THC “dangerous”. I’ve said the process of making budder is dangerous. How you manage to confuse the two statements is beyond me … I suspect you know the difference and are trying to confuse others.

“But go ahead and kick and scream about not knowing my name some more.”

I’m not upset. I take great pleasure in pointing out all the people full of advice for braver folk to heed. You’re just one of about 100 people over the course of my career who knew better than me what to do but were just too frightened to do anything about it themselves.

“The one in proper context that doesn’t pervert the meaning via equivocation and anecdotal personal tolerance.”

You’re using the “Through The Looking Glass” definition:

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.”

This is why you can’t bother providing an actual definition … 1) it doesn’t exist, and 2) it would allow others to critique your reasoning.

“Do you recall where you called yourself a “lightweight”.”

    Yeah … but I wasn’t a lightweight in 2004, when I first tried budder.

‘I can see you haven’t bothered to read the initiative. The word “concentrates” indicates “all inclusive language”‘

You could have asked, I would have said the same. But that clause is good news. Now that we’re beyond that we can work to denounce so called decrim. reformers that speak such atrocities as skunk being a dangerous new drug. There is a difference when it comes from them versus some corrupt senator or NDP leader. Some people need to know better.

“What sort of chickenshit knows everyone at the BCMP and yet won’t put their name beside their insults and their snide remarks? Of course, if I wrote the bullshit you wrote I’d be ashamed to put my name on it too. ”

This is what losing a debate looks like. Cheap ad hominem, no point to it other than attack. The way you’re flying off your rocker, if you did know who I am you’d probably start harassing me at all hours.

“Of course, if I wrote the bullshit you wrote I’d be ashamed to put my name on it too. ”

Nah you’d just cash your paycheck for writing bullshit, like you do now. If you wrote what I do you’d be able to have some pride in your ability.

Name dropping. Paper credentials can be in order but it doesn’t mean he’s an actual authority on the issue. You judge that instead by the caliber of their body of work on that exact issue. “In fact, I challenge you to provide an article about budder that doesn’t mention it’s potency”

    Its potency?
    You really think that’s impossible?
    1. I know how to use search engines.
    2. I could write one.
    3. I could ghostwrite dozens of them.

But that’s besides the point. There is a relation to potency with concentrates, but it’s not at all directly proportional, and the biggest variables have to do with things like tolerance and quality of material, various cannabinoid profiles. If you have a person with no real tolerance, than it might seem very potent, because they just smoked the equivalent of a whole ounce in a single drop.

If you have someone that can smoke a whole ounce unphased, the concentration of what they smoked will not get them any higher than could the profile of cannabinoids that was extracted.

The point is that the concentration doesn’t reach some magical purity where it becomes a dangerous new drug. The only actual dangers associated with budder are the methods used to make it, which you attempted to confuse in your futile effort to be right at all costs.

That’s where you jumped into the branson boat, in your attempt to defend that idiocy. Branson isn’t worried that people will blow themselves up or ingest adulterants in skunk, he’s saying that skunk is “something else” that’s dangerous because of its potent concentration of thc that makes it a deadly new drug. This is ignorant of reason. You get such concentrations just by vaporizing weaker drugs, or making various other concentrates that are illegal in canada.

You were very wrong to attempt to defend that with your backwards analogy of budder.

But go ahead and kick and scream about not knowing my name some more.

“I’m using the dictionary definition of potency … what definition are you using?”

The one in proper context that doesn’t pervert the meaning via equivocation and anecdotal personal tolerance.

“I was never so legless from a tiny dab of hash as I had been from a tiny dab of budder.”

Do you recall where you called yourself a “lightweight”. Of course you make the error of assuming both concentrates came from equal quality stock, or that even your method of smoking them was equivalent. You might like to know that there is a big different between holding a flame to a bowl of hash, and consequently burning off all the THC, vs doing a dab on a heated plate that doesn’t burn off all the THC. But lightweight are unaware of such things.

“What does that have to do with over-regulation in the RMLW Act? If it existed you could point to it in the language … where is it?”

You’re committing the fallacy of “missing the point”.

I will say it one last time, not for you but others who would be fooled by you. Wine is a limited subset with a fixed intrinsic max potency. If specific all inclusive language doesn’t exist in the proposed legislation, then by default it is legislation that only covers low potency, as is wine as the subset of a group that is alcohol.

You’ve already admitted that you’re fine with that, and then you disagree that it’s even there. The fact that no mention of it is there means it is there, due to the intrinsic limit of wine.

“Yes. And RMLW is not “zero regulation”, nor is is “over-regulation”. Rather it’s “just enough regulation”. ”

Again you miss the point completely. “Just enough regulation” according to who? You think because you threw them a bone they’ll be satisfied? Those who are and have always been invested in increased restriction will thank you for the regulation you’ve gifted them with and use it as a stepping stone for more. That is an obvious result, it is the inevitable result. It is their nature.

That basic truth for abuse of power, and power seeking, by way of limiting others and removal of rights, is why there are things like the constitution and bill of rights, to stop it before it happens. If you lack the foresight to recognize a need for all inclusive language in order to limit further future encroachment, reverting towards prohibition in any form, then you’ve accomplished nothing. I know you will miss this point too, as you’ve made it a point to miss all others.

“You’re the first person in the world to make that distinction. Everyone else on planet earth considers it more potent, including people who – unlike yourself actually possess academic backgrounds and reputations.”

Appeal to popularity, appeal to false authority… yaaaaaaaaaawwwwn..

No I’m not. You might want to talk to Greg and Al, who find bubble hash to be every bit as “potent” as budder, even though it’s undeniably less concentrated. Whassat? Did I just hear something fizzle…

I might be the first to catch you on your wrong thinking however, or just to call you on it since it’s obviously your nature to argue till last breath and most would avoid that.

Note that you continue to advocate that THC becomes dangerous at X potency level, requiring government control. Not letting you off the hook on that one.

Finding a link that agrees with you doesn’t prove your point or lend it any weight in this discussion. Doctors and “scientists” have pumped out plenty of stupidity when it comes to this topic, and many others. You can find a pseudo expert opinion to support any point, just like how apparently the taser is non lethal and hasn’t yet been responsible for any deaths.

That’s to say that your schoolyard tactics of debate don’t impress, when your logic is so faulty. Everybody who was ever made a concentration knows it doesn’t make it more potent before a very initial point, and where potency is defined by how it affects you, NOT by how it measures in concentration.

It should be obvious even to you that concentration doesn’t mean diddly jack as to how it would affect you, vs the next guy, vs the next guy. Those who make concentrations like hash and budder, instead, know full well that the final result is only as good as the product you start with. That is why proper hash and oil making separates the wheat from the chaff, isolating the buds from the tops of the plant vs the popcorn from the bottom and so on. Like, are you … knew at this?

Frankly, it worries me that people so misinformed are advocating for anything, let alone anyone so willing to be right that they’re not above being so wrong.

“Quote me and then quote him so I know what the fuck you’re talking about”

Or you could just pay attention and, you know, keep up. It’s easier to keep track of what you say when you’re not just spouting off whatever the fuck and actually have some consistency in your convictions.

When you leverage what risks exist with budder, in order to justify heavier restriction on increased potency, you’re jumping into branson’s boat where skunk is a dangerous new super drug that needs to be banned because it is so potent. You lend that idiocy weight because you fear adulterants and so on. Politics of fear.

But you omitted the obvious fact that the concentration, which you mistake as a measure of potency, isn’t the parameter of budder that involves risk. Very faulty logic.

The only real danger to budder and oil concentrates that warrants concern is born of prohibition since people try to hide what they’re doing indoors while ill equipped to contend with the fumes. Regulated extraction centers are all that’s required, and that has nothing to do whatsoever with how potent or concentrated the end product ends up being. Flying loose with the facts as you’ve done would have honey oil at a max of 2% THC and no doubt still loaded with poisonous shit.

So you’re kind of making it up as you along at this point, kicking the goal posts around to get them across your immoveable ball.

“‘m sure the government will fuck it up. That’s why I’m helping to write the regulations ahead of time, such as in RMLW, or why CAMCD is writing standards ahead of time so that we can challenge the government’s shitty regulations and fight for reasonable regulations instead. ”

Okay then. Then heed my damn warning and ensure it’s fully inclusive of all strains, at all concentrations AND potency, and ensure that concentration isn’t proportionately conflated with potency.

Ensure that it’s written in such a way that it can’t be reinterpreted, and that the intent be made specific. “Regulate like wine” is just a fucking catch phrase for market value but to have such legislation realized verbatim would be a fatal flaw.

“as a debating partner you disappoint me. I wish there was someone around here that could help me break a sweat.”

I have to say that you’re dreaming in technicolor in a number of ways. Like previously in commenting on RLW Vs no regulation, where you suggested if there were no regulations they would find cause to regulate it…. so let’s just regulate it and they’ll have no cause. As if because of some regulation they would not want more regulation? Yeah like that’s realistic.

“1) If you distill wine it no longer is wine – it’s brandy. ”

You do realize you just admitted to being willfully ignorant as to the flaw I mentioned with RLW as it pertains to only regulating lower potency. Brandy higher potency than wine. They are BOTH ALCOHOL.

“2) There is ZERO in the RMLW Act that involves over-regulation.”

Well according you, zero regulation invites further regulation. So which is it? If it’s not inclusive by design than it is exclusive by apparent incompetence.

“3) I think super-potent solvent-based extracts such as red oil and budder SHOULD be regulated, so that the process isn’t done in residential areas, so that only food-grade N butane is used and so that all materials are tested for contaminants and the test results are publicly available. ”

LOL. They are super concentrated. They are no more potent. You don’t know the difference? But if you’re ignorant of the problem in the argument you just made, then you’re a hopeless case in seeing in anywhere else. Did you know you’re a proponent of argument’s such as branson’s? That’s how far into the deep end you just went. Did you realize that? Or are you too blinded in your effort to be right to even care at this point.

What makes you think the government is interested in or at all capable of doing it safely. Are you familiar with the list of food product recalls? Are you familiar with the pharmaceutical recalls, shortages, tainted products… but you think they’ll succeed in budder, where they’ve failed everywhere else so perfectly.

I see. If only I had waited longer for my private message to get to him I would have succeeded, but because I didn’t wait around for a week or two I failed.

Probably not. Probably he doesn’t have time to read all the mail he gets and now the truth is available to some of the people who saw his video whereas if I had waited less people would know the truth.

“That which is that wine, as I’m sure you well know, had a fixed maximum potency. To get beyond it distillation is required and that is regulated.”

  1086. Anonymous on

Nah, you’ve got that all wrong and are seeing what you want to see at this point. Let me set you straight again.

The concern is that you were thus far ineffective in getting your retraction, and as such not having “the truth” reach as wide an audience as possible.

I don’t actually personally give a shit or even some fraction thereof about his feelings. That doesn’t mean you can afford to be ignorant of them in the process of manipulating them.

A little professional courtesy amongst peers can go a long way in forming lasting bonds or barriers. You “had” an opportunity here….. maybe.

Now you’re going to tell me “if you can do it better”. No, don’t get all defensive, this is not an attack. It’s an honest critic and I’m just telling you how I think you can do it better.

See that? I don’t actually give a shit about your feelings but I had to take them into account in manipulating you. Just joking…. maybe.

Ostensibly I think RLW effort is probably not that bad, where the previous one was actually very bad.

But you can’t be ignorant of either the forces working to flank it, or the methods and avenues they’ll employ to do so.

There is undeniably the intrinsic limit to potency that I already discussed. That which is that wine, as I’m sure you well know, had a fixed maximum potency. To get beyond it distillation is required and that is regulated.

Next to that you have high level politicians and propagandists like US Senators, like Richard Branson as I’ve just shown you, and now Mulcair of the NDP, all breathing life into that absolute bullshit about super potent new age pot being super dangerous … the revival of old school reefer madness. They have already sewn those seeds decades ago and they’ve been cultivating them vigorously, globally, in recent times.

Taken together, you have the fabric for continued prohibition, while all that’s “regulated like wine”, is rope. You have to be blind not to see that comming, and asking for a “source” on your part doesn’t negate that cold reality. So you best start discussing it, I should think. Because if it’s being ignored, you are definitely being blindsided.

Otherwise, give me a single good reason, with “source”, as to exactly why the proposed RLW legislation doesn’t discuss the issue of potency, when given the current climate, it clearly needs to.

  1087. DML on

Let’s see if I got this right.

Your focus is diplomacy, and sensitivity to egos, and protocol.

My focus is telling the truth and correcting misinformation.

You’re concerned about how Cenk might get his feelings hurt if I correct him in public.

My concern is that someone may believe Cenk and then repeat the bad information.

I just don’t believe that the emotional needs of one journalist outweigh the need of the entire community to have access to the truth.

As for Regulate Marijuana Like Wine …

You’re welcome to propose a better initiative … but be prepared to pay 30,000 dollars to pay for a poll to see how well your language is recieved by the California voting public, as we have done … and then may the best initiative get the funding for 2014. We poll at over 62% in 2011 and 2012, which is the highest any legalization initiative has ever polled in California.

Your concern over “hidden limit on potency” doesn’t exist anywhere in the world, and has nothing whatsoever to do with our initiative, which is probably why you don’t bother to quote any relevant passage in the initiative.

Were that in fact the case, such an appeal to popularity doesn’t make it the correct approach. False equivalence. I didn’t publish an article about it on a dedicated website. A proper juxtaposition would have been had you merely left comments on their youtube page and left it at that.

“we react to things all the time and rarely attempt to contact the person privately”

Normally what you’d react to would be considered opponents at war. You’re not in their Rolodex so to speak. As such a public reaction to them is the only recourse to counter their lies, which are, I think, knowingly intentional, and not innocent ignorance.

In this case we’re not dealing with such, but hopefully an ally, who is most likely innocently ignorant.

As per striking when the iron is hot. Why be striking an ally at all? I don’t think it a correct notion for this form of media either. Mostly because it’s not broadcast per se. Events don’t transpire in a fleeting moment. Do they get the majority of views the minute they release it? Or do they get them when cannabis culture links to it and discusses it, and people email it around and so forth. Traffic flow would likely take the shape of a bell curve, and so the iron as it were, would likely be hottest X time after the initial release, and slowly peter out, unless it went viral for some reason.

You raised the topic yourself and hold the ability to do so at a time of your choosing, so there’s no rush. That action affects the shape of the traffic flow curve. True success would have been to convince him to post an edit for his whole audience, not merely the fraction of it that’s shared with yours to see comments. That equates to preaching to the choir.

He probably doesn’t like being wrong anymore than you do, and it might take awhile for him to come to his senses. Maybe what was really required was a better way of reaching them.

“I’m sure he just wants the truth to be heard. ”

Much like yourself, and probably everyone else, he wants his version of truth to be heard. He’s sympathetic to marijuana, but it’s unclear if he’s really in the fight for it, or just against the drug war. It’s actually not an insignificant distinction. That’s to say that he’s not necessarily invested in your truth, and may be more invested in trying to seem moderate.

That tactic of attempting to seem moderate, objective, or reasonable, as you can see, leaves the window wide open for misinformation of the highest absurdity. It leaves common sense and strong opinion on the fence because “the research just isn’t all in yet”, “we can’t be quick to judgement”. It conflates the intent of keeping an open mind with having an empty one.

This is where Branson comes in. He is of some persuasion in the debate at this point, unfortunately. Those of his kind and position tend to argue on behalf of legalization or decriminalization from the strict perspective of doing it to eradicate the black market, as though that is the only conceivable ill born of prohibition. Laughable. It tends to call the bluff of the opposition, but that’s only good for a superficial nod while ignoring their underlying motivations. Bit of a pyrrhic victory that.

That also leaves them free to argue the absurd. When they say skunk is super dangerous … not like what we all smoked in the 60’s that didn’t kill anyone, and that it causes schizophrenia to “flare up”, like it’s a rash, and only if they have it anyway. Such broken logic could easily be shot to hell, but rather than debunk it, it’s entertained, if not reinforced. “If we legalize low potency weed… the dangerous super potency black market killer skunk will be eradicated”.

So on one hand you have people of his kin arguing that idiocy into the ears of high level politicians, and on the other hand you have “regulate like wine”… where as I already explained, has an inbuilt and potentially hidden limit on potency.

If I were branson, perhaps wanting to manufacture and sell weed, I wouldn’t be at all opposed to regulations that restricted quality to that of very low production standards, costs and effort. Then it’s simply a question of economies of scale.

Imagine if no music were allowed to be good music, and then imagine the measure of success was little more than the most production, or airplay, with the least overhead, or quality. Nickleback would reign supreme and legally there could be no better.

I feel like I ripped a piece out of you here…. not so much my intent, just that I’m very good at it and can’t help myself.

So I gift you with the following:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=sqMZzQkP9kM#t=466s

What’s the motivation of a knob like that, who currently has the ear of the UN on the matter, to be so… ignorant? Is it? Shocking wouldn’t you say? Is it possible he is actually that misinformed, or is he simply trying to seem… moderate. At what cost?

Do you actually think the truth can afford to have people begging for absurd regulation this way.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical commonly found in plastic water bottles, both the disposable and hard nalgene variety. BPA has been proven to increase the likely hood of breast cancer in women. And when the hot smoke of a toke warms that old plastic water bottle, BPA is released.

It’s just like tin foil deaths. People try to smoke meth from a little folded slab of tin foil. That aluminum release fluorine gas when heated, a toxic chemical that kills very quickly.

Is it an absolute fact that marijuana doesn’t cause lung cancer? No, it’s not, but the science thus far indicates that it is highly, highly, highly unlikely that it does. All we can hope for is that science continues testing, furthering scientific knowledge, and maybe eventually arriving at the conclusion that it’s practically impossible to develop lung cancer from cannabis smoke.

    Personally, I’ll continue to vaporize.

“No matter how emphatic and insistent a person is, in my world extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

Fair enough. The you must concede and accept/admit that God, Jesus, Heaven and Hell do not exist.

To claim the existence of an omnipotent being who created everything in just 6 days seems extraordinary. And if God is so powerful, why did he take so long.

To claim that the son of God, complete with super powers, came down to earth, cured the sick, healed the blind, water to wine and all that mojo witchcraft hocus pocus, but couldn’t conjure up an AR-16 assault rifle to dispatch some Roman thugs, that’s exceptionally extraordinary.

To claim the existence of a place between places called Heaven, immortal bliss, if you’ve been good and worshiped the right religion, a place nobody have ever seen, knows where it is, how to get there, that’s extraordinary.

To claim the absolution of Hell, a forever burning pit of smouldering sulpher where a nasty red man pokes at you with a pitch fork because you chose to believe one book of wives-tales and fables over another, that’s pretty extraordinary.

But when science runs tests, makes observation, collects figures, references other studies, arriving upon a conclusion of fact that can be reasonably and accurately duplicated under similar and or identical conditions, that preponderance of evidence is somehow just a deluded opinion?

Science has tried and succeeded in proving that smoking cannabis does not significantly (or even slightly) increase the possibility of developing lung cancer, OCPD or respiratory disease, that’s scientific fact.

Science has also tried to prove the existence of God (or a god of some sort), and thus far cannot find any evidence to support the possibility of there being an all powerful spirit in the sky.

    So. . .

Given how quickly issues die and how important it is to strike while the iron is hot and while the topic is raised and while it is fresh in people’s minds, it’s more important that journalists reply to each other publicly in a timely fashion rather than wait around for a reply in private. “No matter how emphatic and insistent a person is, in my world extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

The fact of the matter is that there have been no cases of a marijuana-only smoker going on to get lung cancer provided by the leading investigator into this area of science – Dr. Donald Tashkin – or anyone else. That’s extraordinary evidence. You would think, in a world of about 300 million people who smoke pot, about 30 million in the USA and about 3 million in Canada, there would be at least one case of a marijuana-only smoker going on to get lung cancer, if cannabis smoking caused cancer, there would be many examples handy, but there are zero examples. This stands in contrast to tobacco smoking:

Across the developed world, 91% of lung cancer deaths in men during the year 2000 were attributed to smoking (71% for women).[22] In the United States, smoking is estimated to account for 87% of lung cancer cases (90% in men and 85% in women).[23]

Multiple animal and preclinical studies, as well as a few case and/or pilot studies strongly suggest that cannabinoids are cancer fighting agents for a wide range of cancers, including breast carcinoma (Cafferal et al., 2010; Cafferal, Sarrió, Palacios, Guzmán, & Sánchez, 2006; De Petrocellis et al., 1998; Ligresti et al., 2006; McAllister, Christian, Horowitz, Garcia, & Desprez, 2007), prostate cancer (Mimeault, Pommery, Wattez, Bailly, & Hénichart, 2003; Ruiz, Miguel, & Diaz-Laviada, 1999; Sarfaraz, Afaq, Adhami, & Muhktar, 2005), pancreatic adenocarcinoma (Carracedo et al., 2006; Michalski et al., 2008), colorectal carcinoma (Patsos et al., 2005), skin carcinoma (Casanova et al., 2003), neuroblastoma (Guzmán, 2003), lung carcinoma (Guzmán, 2003; Preet, Ganju, & Groopman, 2008), uterus carcinoma (Guzmán, 2003), oral cancer (Whyte et al., 2010), cervical carcinoma (Ramer & Hinz, 2008), lymphoma (Gustafsson, Christensson, Sander, & Flygare, 2006; Gustafsson et al., 2008), gliomas (Blázquez et al., 2003; Blázquez et al., 2004; Galve-Roperh et al., 2000; Guzmán et al., 2006; Massi et al., 2004; Sánchez, Galve-Roperh, Canova, Brachet, & Guzmán, 1998), leukemia cells (Jia et al., 2006; Powles et al., 2005), and biliary tract cancers (Leelawat, Leelawat, Narong, & Matangkasombut, 2010). In fact, the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that the cannabinoids have anticancer properties, with hundreds of peer-reviewed studies to date demonstrating these effects (see http://www.cannabisscience.com/ for a list of over 800 peer-reviewed cannabis and cancer references).

“For you to claim to know the medical history of 300 million people is ridiculous. For you to not know that that is ridiculous is amazing.”

I do know that the synthetic fuel and medicine industries are worth billions and exert a huge force upon the mass media to produce horror stories about cannabis for them to justify the fuel and medicine monopolies that keep those billions of dollars rolling in. If there were actual cases of cannabis causing cancer – even just one single case – they would be splashed across the pages of every newspaper in the world. But there have been none … not because they’ve been overlooked, but because they don’t exist.

If the absurd becomes ordinary, then an extra ordinary claim doesn’t actually require extra ordinary evidence, but rather ordinary evidence. The burden of proof ultimately resides with the absurd to prove their absurd claims not only true, but relevant.

Thus, one may choose to personally err on the side of caution, but not dictate extra ordinary measures of caution unto others, for that becomes the absurd.

The standard air most city dwellers breath likely contains more toxins and carcinogens by orders of magnitude, under clear conditions, than we’re actually discussing even in heavy marijuana use. Your nonsensical bickery lacks all relativistic perspective, with purpose.

Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers have discovered that marijuana-like chemicals trigger receptors on human immune cells that can directly inhibit a type of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) found in late-stage AIDS, according to new findings published online in the journal PLoS ONE.

Medical marijuana is prescribed to treat pain, debilitating weight loss and appetite suppression, side effects that are common in advanced AIDS. This is the first study to reveal how the marijuana receptors found on immune cells — called cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 — can influence the spread of the virus. Understanding the effect of these receptors on the virus could help scientists develop new drugs to slow the progression of AIDS.

“If a person is worried about cancer from smoking cannabis, then vaporization and using edibles are two obvious alternatives.”

If someone is worried about a problem for which there is zero evidence for it’s existance, then their problem goes beyond selecting a mode of administration – their problem is one of believing any bullshit that gets handed to them. The solution is for them to learn to do a bit of research first before deciding upon whether a solution is required or not. Your solution – to believe in the bullshit without investigating it first, just reinforces the problem.

“Whether or not there is evidence to back up DML’s claim is irrelevant, since there is also plenty of evidence to back up a billion other questionable claims.”

Actually, that’s not true. If it was true you could provide counter-evidence to the evidence I’ve provided … but so far you have not.

Where is your evidece that it’s the cannabis smoke – not the heat – doing the damage to the lungs? If there is “plenty” of evidence, surely you can provide some.

“So ultimately it boils down to what you implied – use your own judgement and common sense. Mine tells me that smoking anything in excess can have some negative effects, one of which may in fact be cancer.”

Your common sense is a bit out of whack if there are 300,000,000 cannabis smokers all over the world and not one recorded case of a marijuana-only smoker going on to get lung cancer.

Maybe the problem is your qualifier – “in excess” – indicates that your solution – to stop smoking entirely – is unnecessary, when smoking less cannabis (of stronger cannabis or hashish) is all that is required.

Of course, there’s no evidence that smoking cannabis “in excess” will lead to cancer either so you should probably not attempt to foist stigma where none need exist, because unlike your concerns, stigma IS harmful … it sometimes leads to discrimination … and occasionally genocide.

The study does not say whether it has identified the cannabis smoke or the heat from the smoke as the major factor causing the problems. Perhaps extracts through a triple-filter water pipe would cause less damage than just smoking fatties all day. As well, the study does not differentiate between organic cannabis and those grown in radioactive chemical fertilizers. The study does not differentiate between low-grade Mexican shwag and extra-sticky dank nugs, that you don’t have to smoke as much to get the same effect from.

Furthermore, you can’t say that people shouldn’t use cannabis daily. Some conditions – such as cancer, aids, glaucoma, epilepsy, and MS, require daily use, and some of these “daily use” conditions, such as depression, fatigue, stress, insomnia, are suffered by people we consider “healthy” or “recreational users”.

  1112. Anonymous on

It does cause increased incidence of lung infections, meaning bacterial. It’s really not a good idea to use Cannabis daily. Maybe on weekends. You get tolerant to it within a few days of regular use anyway. Like all good things, moderation is the key. I find it impossible to quit permanently. I can go for a few weeks and then I fall into a state close to depression. I guess you could just call it a lack of enthusiasm for life. If I then use a small amount it snaps me out of the malaise. It has a lot better effects when used infrequently too. So IMO it’s not completely harmless but if used occasionally it has benefits which seem to outweigh the negatives. It’s probably the best antidepressant available, and it doesn’t make you go on a killing spree like pharmaceutical antidepressants. The following is a quote about possible side effects. I guess using it in edibles would preclude all or most of these effects. It just takes so darn long to kick in.

“Habitual smoking of marijuana has a number of effects on the respiratory and immune systems that may be clinically relevant. These include alterations in lung function ranging from no to mild airflow obstruction without evidence of diffusion impairment, an increased prevalence of acute and chronic bronchitis, striking endoscopic findings of airway injury (erythema, edema, and increased secretions) that correlate with histopathological alterations in bronchial biopsies, and dysregulated growth of the bronchial epithelium associated with altered expression of nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins involved in the pathogenesis of bronchogenic carcinoma. Other consequences of regular marijuana use include ultrastructual abnormalities in human alveolar macrophages along with impairment of their cytokine production, antimicrobial activity, and tumoricidal function. Cannabinoid receptor expression is altered in leukocytes collected from the blood of chronic smokers, and experimental models support a role for delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol in suppressing T cell function and cell-mediated immunity. The potential for marijuana smoking to predispose to the development of respiratory malignancy is suggested by several lines of evidence, including the presence of potent carcinogens in marijuana smoke and their resulting deposition in the lung, the occurrence of premalignant changes in bronchial biopsies obtained from smokers of marijuana in the absence of tobacco, impairment of antitumor immune defenses by delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol, and several clinical case series in which marijuana smokers were disproportionately over represented among young individuals who developed upper or lower respiratory tract cancer. Additional well designed epidemiological and immune monitoring studies are required to determine the potential causal relationship between marijuana use and the development of respiratory infection and/or cancer.”
