For the third year in a row, the number of people in state and federal prisons in the US has declined, the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics reported Thursday.
Despite an increased emphasis on treatment and prevention programs in recent years, the Obama administration in its 2013 budget still requested $25.6 billion in federal spending on the drug war. Of that, $15 billion would go to law enforcement, interdiction and international efforts.
A solid majority of voters nationwide favor legalizing and regulating marijuana similar to the way alcohol and tobacco cigarettes are currently regulated. Most also don’t believe it should be a crime for people to smoke marijuana in the privacy of their own homes.
In a just-released poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, three quarters of American voters (74%) want the Obama administration to respect individual state medical marijuana laws.
