Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) on Friday vetoed a bill that would legalize the sale of recreational marijuana, nearly a year after residents voted to set up a system to sell and regulate the drug.
On Tuesday, Maine will be the first state to formally consider the idea, even though the federal government still classifies marijuana as an illicit drug.
Campaigners on Monday handed in nearly double the number of signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. Some will be bad, but that’s a pretty big cushion.
