Health Canada has told a cannabis retailer about two hours north of Toronto that it must remove a large, colourful mural from the outside of its building.
Treetz Cannabis, an independently run store in the community of Collingwood, had an artist paint a mural on the outside. The mural includes various characters painted in bright colours.
Store manager Jordan Wannamaker tells Simcoe.com that the owners recently received an email from Health Canada citing federal regulations that prohibit the depiction of a person, character, or animal, whether real or fictional or imagery that appeals to young people.
“We’re trying to be different,” he said. “Away from the mainstream type of cannabis dispensary.
“We wanted to be creative and make it attractive. We want people to come and enjoy themselves. It was a nice facelift to what it used to be because it was kind of lacklustre. So, we want to keep the imagination going. Make it fun.”
The story, which the company shared on social media, has gained them local attention, with some coming by to grab a picture of the mural before it’s gone. The owners plan to adhere to Health Canada’s email, planning to paint over it soon, and are not entirely defeated.”
