American podcaster Joe Rogan hosted Canadian politician Pierre Poilievre on his podcast on March 19, in which they briefly shared a surprising agreement on the value of legal cannabis.
The two podcast-bros discussed an array of current issues, such as Trump, Carney, Tariffs, and Canadian sovereignty, as well as partisan talking points on the culture war.
Overall, the conversation was chummy, with the two agreeing on nearly every topic and position, even, interestingly, the idea of legalizing cannabis. Towards the end of the two-hour long conversation, Rogan expressed his appreciation for Canada and mentioned that Canada had legalized cannabis.
The surprising part, for Canadians who don’t have the political memory of a gnat, was Poilievre’s agreement with Rogan on the topic and principles of cannabis legalization. Despite Poilievre’s agreement with Rogan that the government should not be preventing people from consuming something like cannabis, cheeseburgers, or whisky, he and his entire party (save for one, who was punished for it) voted against legalizing cannabis in Canada.
The Conservatives, including Polievre, not only voted against the bill that legalized and regulated cannabis in Canada, but also opposed the process at every step, refusing to even improve or refine the bill during a series of House Committee hearings on the bill as it made its way through Parliament.
Here’s how the conversation between Rogan and Poilievre went. First, Rogan mentions to Poilievre that Canada has legal marijuana in the course of telling a story about wanting to come do a show in Canada, to which Poilievre replies that it’s been legal for ten years (the law will be 8 years old this coming October, but close enough, I guess).
