After a few months of recharging my cannabis creative energies, I’m ready to write and photograph marijuana strains for my next Green Candy Press guidebook. The strain hunt is back on and this upcoming weekend May 23-25 during Toronto Champs Expo you can contribute your cannabis strains to Marijuana Smoker’s Guidebook volume two.
I’m looking forward to meeting with enthusiasts to talk about their favorite toke during Champs. Often I find what potheads are personally toking on is much different than what is getting hyped on websites. I’m anticipating plenty of kushes, cheeses and probably some cool old school strain selections too.
Too much cannabis can be a bad thing when it comes to reviewing. Every strain deserves it’s own special word commitment, but it was after reviewing and photographing a plethora of pot last fall that I opted to take a serious break from writing. Two amazing contributions came in simultaneously – one from Pot TV webcaster Redbeard – and by the time I was finished finalizing the final copy for the first 95 strains I needed a break.
As a Humber School for Writers graduate I take great care in crafting cannabis reviews that are very entertaining to not just enthusiasts but the causal person who found the book at Urban Outfitters or via a friend. An in-the-know friend should be helping the less fortunate by giving the guidebook as gifts.
Authors are told to write to their reader and I conceptualized a marijuana enthusiast who enjoys an alternative lifestyle not so much one strictly into cannabis culture. Cannabis crosses so many cultural boundaries that it can be challenging to create something anyone can pick up and read with enjoyment.
By breaking free from the traditional categorized marijuana review rankings I was able to craft a guide that appeals to both engaged enthusiasts and the casual toker. I looked to wine guides (many of the terms are taken from the wiki wine term page) and music reviews for the basis of what I was writing.
The well crafted music reviews from the pages of Exclaim or NOW are perfectly suitable to adopt for cannabis reviews. I have many other influences, but that is the backbone of my bud reviewing. Approach it like a music critic would.
People who contribute strains to volume two will receive honorable mentions. I’m looking forward to acquiring a good chunk of the second half this weekend during Champs Canada Expo.
