Laval police got a tip about a dead body that turned into the discovery of a marijuana grow operation in the city’s Laval des Rapides district.
The call about a corpse came into a 9-1-1 call center about 11:45 p.m. Monday, Laval polic e Constable Nathalie Lorrain said.
Soon after, police officers visited the dwelling in question, on 11th Ave. near Souvenir Blvd. They knocked on the door but there was no response. They went to check out the windows and ended up back at the front door, which was by then ajar, Lorrain said.
Inside, a man was nervously waiting in the living room, she said. “Right away the officers smelled the pot, “ Lorrain said.
Police discovered about 500 pot plants in the basement. “They were about a foot high; not very big,” Lorrain said.
The man, 42, and a woman, 30, who resided there are expected to be arraigned Tuesday at the Laval courthouse on charges of marijuana possession and marijuana production.
Lorrain said the anonymous tip about a dead body at the home may have come from a frustrated neighbour or a competitor in the drug business.
