Malaysian Man to Hang for Cannabis Trafficking

SHAH ALAM: A former TMNet customer service technician was sentenced to death by the High Court here Friday after he was found guilty of trafficking in 1,800gm of cannabis at a petrol station in Petaling Jaya three years ago.

Justice Datuk Syed Ahmad Helmy Syed Ahmad held that the prosecution had proven its case against M. Saravanan Muthu, 35, beyond reasonable doubt.

“Since under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, there is only mandatory death penalty, I hereby pass the death sentence on the defendant,” said Ahmad Helmy.

Saravanan was found guilty of committing the offence at the Esso petrol station in Jalan Utara, Petaling Jaya, at about 9pm on March 9, 2006.

Prosecution led by deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin called seven witnesses while Saravanan Muthu was the only defence witness called by his counsel, S. S. Seelan.- Bernama
