The ceiling of the room is eight feet high. I put up one floor-to-ceiling post, and used white polystyrene to make two walls from the post to the bedroom walls at 90-degrees to the post. The set up created a six-foot by six-foot space within the bedroom (see sketch).
I put 16 clones of Chernobyl and 11 clones of Purple Kush under a 1,000-watt Hortilux HPS bulb. I also have two fluorescent light fixtures with red and blue spectrum bulbs in both. The clones were put in the room seven days after roots appeared.
The plants were arranged in five rows of five or six. Fresh air was brought in through vents in the bottom of the poly wall, with a 90-degree bend in the dryer hose to prevent any light from seeping into the grow area. Exhaust vents were at the top of the room to take out the warmer air. The temperature was 25˚C (77˚F) with the lights on, and 20˚C (68˚F) in the dark.
I gave the plants 7 days of veg and 56 days of flowering before harvest. For nutrients, I used a Dutch product called Biobizz, which is an organic nutrient from Europe now distributed in North America by General Hydroponics. I used PreMix Fertilizer, added compost, composted potting soil, perlite, worm castings, and leonardite stone in the mix. The plants were kept in 2-gallon grow bags.
Water is stored below my grow bags in a plastic tub and pumped to the plants. Never overload the soil with nutrients, even organic kinds, because you want all the elements to be used up by the end of flushing. The last three weeks should be just water and Botanicare Sweet, a natural carbosugar that impacts flavor and weight.
Before chop-down, the Chernobyl plants were up to 26 inches tall; the Purple Kush reached 16 to 18 inches. The Chernobyl had one big main cola, profuse sparkling resin, and a light lime green color. The Purple Kush had hard, dense nugs with purple, pink, and amethyst tones. Despite being the smaller plant of the two strains, the Kush weight at harvest was pretty much the same as the Chernobyl because the Kush nugs were tight and compact.
Of 27 plants in my bedroom space, the total yield was 26 ounces. Each plant gave virtually an ounce of dry, manicured bud. You could do the same!
