New Brunswick Court of Queen’s Bench, Feb 12/03
Tony Martin, 31, pleaded guilty to production of marijuana. He had 1,374 plants growing in his basement. If the plants had reached maturity, their value was estimated at over one million dollars retail.
Martin has an old, unrelated criminal record with five convictions. The crown opposed house arrest because of Martin’s ongoing marijuana use. The judge observed, however, that Martin had successfully kicked alcohol and hadn’t committed any offenses in 10 years. The judge concluded that Martin was to be trusted and was not a danger to the community.
Martin received an 18-month conditional sentence, under house arrest.
