I read the sad news that Christopher Hitchens, the always controversial and unique wizard of words, died yesterday from complications due to cancer at 62. Hitchens was a well known political commentator and author who publicly advocated marijuana legalization and spoke out against drug prohibition.
Love him or hate him – or love some of his opinions and hate some of them like me – Hitchens will be remembered for his mastery of the English language and his love of an enthusiastic debate.
Here’s Hitchens discussing marijuana decriminalization on C-SPAN:
Hitchens was also a regular on Real Time with Bill Maher. Here’s a clip of the two discussing the ‘insanity’ of prohibition (Hitchens enters at the 5:00 mark):
Hitchens also wrote recently about former US President Bill Clinton’s love of marijuana edibles, bringing light to the Prez’s comment that he “didn’t inhale”.
“He preferred, like many another marijuana enthusiast, to take his dope in the form of large handfuls of cookies and brownies,” Hitchens wrote.
R.I.P. Hitch.
