Medical Marijuana Bill Killed By Louisiana Senate Committee

There will be no medical marijuana legislation passing through the Louisiana Legislature this year.

A Senate Health and Welfare Committee killed a bill Wednesday (April 30) sponsored by Sen. Fred Mills, R-New Iberia, a pharmacist, that he said would have set up the tightest law in the United States regulating the prescription and dispensing of marijuana for medical purposes.

Though the Legislature legalized marijuana for medical purposes in 1991, there’s no mechanism in current law that allows for the legal dispensing of the drug for patients who have a legal prescription in hand.

The bill was involuntarily deferred by a vote of 6-2.
