This presentation will compare the drug origin myths of India (Soma and the churning of the milk ocean) and Europe (Dionysos’s introduction of wine and Bacchic rites to ancient Greece).

In Euripides’ Bacchae, the route of Dionysos to Bactria and back will be examined in regard to the many intoxication cults found there.

The soma temple excavated by Sarianidi in Bactria seems to be the starting point for both the Eastern and Western drug origin myths.
