Question: Ed we have a couple garden beds that are about 20′ x 80′ and I am wondering how to treat the soil over the winter. I was told we need to sterilize it. My plan was to pile it in a big pile with a front loader and cover it with black plastic … maybe adding some other ingredients to get composting action on.
Ed’s Rosenthal: Barry, presuming that the soil needs a lot of work, you may find it easier to use a raised bed filled with enriched-premium landscape mix. Digging is just so tedious. Another idea is to pile about a foot and a half of compostable material on the bed and let it compost over the winter. Make sure to include some hot (high nitrogen) material such as manure or seed meals.
