In one of the few scientific developments likely to interest both the Governor of North Dakota and Method Man, scientists at the University of Minnesota have identified the genes in cannabis that allow the plant to produce THC.

Finding the genes opens the path to either create drug-free hemp plants for industrial purposes, or to develop plants with much higher concentrations of the psychotropic chemical.

Harvard University researchers have found that, in both laboratory and mouse studies, delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cuts tumor growth in half in common lung cancer while impeding the cancer's ability to spread.

The US government has announced they will loosen key restrictions on the use of marijuana for scientific research. The new rules, announced on May 21 and coming into force this December, will empower the National Institute on Drug Abuse to sell marijuana to any privately funded scientists whose research proposals have been approved.
