Banks Wary of Marijuana-Dispensary Accounts

Wells Fargo & Co. — which medical-marijuana dispensary owners say is virtually the only bank in Colorado willing to take their business — has stopped opening new accounts for dispensaries.

Cristie Drumm, a spokeswoman for the banking giant, said Wells Fargo is examining state and federal laws to determine what the bank's risk is in working with dispensaries.

"We're not actively opening accounts with these businesses at this time," she said.

Denver now appears to have more marijuana dispensaries than liquor stores, Starbucks coffee shops or public schools, according to city and corporate records.

A push by City Council members to regulate the medical marijuana industry and restrict where dispensaries can locate appears to have prompted a surge in sales-tax license applications, city officials say.

A new restaurant on Broadway in downtown Denver claims it is the first of its kind... anywhere. Ganja Gourmet serves food items laced with marijuana. And not just brownies. This place has all kinds of different dishes made with pot sprinkled in.

When voters legalized medical marijuana in Colorado in 2000, it's not certain if this is exactly what they had in mind.

Wake-Up Call: Tax Marks The Pot in Denver

On December 1, the City of Denver will start collecting city sales tax from every medical marijuana dispensary in the city. "Tax revenue agents will be meeting with all dispensaries, giving them the information," says Denver City Attorney David Fine.

Not that the city has a list of all the dispensaries. But Fine is confident the city will find them -- or that the dispensaries will simply find their way to the City Treasurer, and cough up the 3.6 percent tax. "That's the easy part," Fine says.

Denver became the first city in the nation to make the private use of marijuana legal for adults 21 and older as an alternative to alcohol, a far more harmful drug. By 10.45 p.m. Tuesday night, with 100% of the votes tallied, the Alcohol-Marijuana Equalization Initiative had passed 53.49% YES to 46.51% NO.
