Olympic Champion Michael Phelps Caught With Marijuana Pipe

Olympic Champion Michael Phelps, who vaulted to international stardom during the 2008 Summer Olympics by winning a record eight gold medals in swimming, has been caught in a very compromising position, according to a report by the British paper News of the World.

The paper has a photo of Phelps smoking from a bong, a water pipe normally used for smoking marijuana. The alleged photo was taken at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where Phelps was visiting a female student who he was secretly seeing. The paper's anonymous source relates that Phelps partied hard each night he was there, which is not out of keeping with other reports of the Olympian since his swimming triumphs.

News of the World also makes the very provocative claim that people representing Phelps tried to snuff out the story and offered the paper extraordinary incentives not to publish their story.

14-Times Olympic Gold Medal Winner Michael Phelps Caught With Cannabis Pipe

by Georgina Dickinson, News Of The World

THIS is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.

In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.

The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.

Those dreams seemed the last thing on his mind when he puffed from the bong during two days of partying with students last November, a quiet time in the swimming calendar when athletes would not expect to get tested for drugs.

One party-goer who witnessed the star’s behaviour told the News of the World: “He was out of control from the moment he got there.

“If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”

Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.

It was on November 6, weeks after his Beijing triumph, that 23-year-old Phelps surprised students at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia by showing up unannounced at a house party.

He was visiting Jordan Matthews, a girl he was secretly seeing who was a student there.

Our source revealed: “Michael came to visit Jordan but ended up just getting wasted every night.

“He arrived with a group of girls hanging all over him. Jaws hit the floor when he walked in. You don’t get many celebrities in Columbia, so when Phelps comes to your party it’s a very big deal.

Obnoxious

“He didn’t know many people so you’d think he’d be a little shy. But he was loud, obnoxious and slamming beers from the get-go.

“Every girl wanted a piece of him and every guy wanted to be his best buddy. He couldn’t get enough of all the attention.”

As he basked in his hero status, Phelps knocked back beers and shots of spirits. And when a student offered him the glass bong engraved with red writing, he did not hesitate, says our source.

The 6ft 4ins athlete, in a white T-shirt and navy cap worn back to front, clasped the device in his huge hands and inhaled deeply.

Our source said: “You could tell Michael had smoked before. He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do.

“He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits. Michael ended up getting a little paranoid, though, because before too long he looked like he was nervous and ran out of the place.”

But the next night, Phelps was out partying again. The source added: “He was right back at it at Pavlov’s bar.

“Like the night before he was holding court, throwing back shots two at a time and pouring drinks to every cute girl.”

Drink has got Phelps into trouble before. In 2004, aged 19, he got 18 months probation for driving while under the influence.

His wild behaviour is in stark contrast to the grim regime which took him to the top of his sport.

He once described his life, saying: “All you do is eat, sleep, swim; eat, sleep, swim; eat, sleep, swim.”

Last night Phelps’ management team and the sporting world closed ranks over the scandal.

Taint

The US Olympics Committee, who have pledged to clamp down on drug use, refused to comment, as did USA Swimming and Phelps’ coach Bob Bowman.

More surprising still was the World Anti-Doping Agency’s refusal to comment, given that they introduced the four-year ban on sport’s drug users.

Phelps, who earned £4million last year in endorsements, has resumed training for the 2012 games.

But there were fears about his commitment when, weeks after the bong incident, he began dating former stripper Caroline Pal.

Phelps is represented by marketing giant Octagon, which works with huge brands such as Mastercard and HSBC. They admitted proven cannabis use would be “a major taint” on Phelps’ character.

Spokesman Clifford Bloxham offered us an extraordinary deal not to publish our story, saying Phelps would become our columnist for three years, host events and get his sponsors to advertise with us.

In return, he asked that we kill Phelps’ bong picture. Bloxham said: “It’s seeing if something potentially very negative for Michael could turn into something very positive for the News of the World.”

He stressed that the swimmer had taken 1,500 drug tests and never failed one.

Until now?

Anyone who still thinks cannabis makes people lazy or unsuccessful is completely ignorant.

A lot of people stick to that stereotype like glue. I really hope he doesn't get raped on this one. I also hope that he doesn't turn bitch and apologize for his actions.

Spokesman

someone should be talking to him about standing up to these people trying to ruin his reputation. He would make an excellent spokesman and role model.

meh

while i wholeheartedly wish that phelps would stand up & be a strong advocate for pot legalization, i do think that this may have ruined his career. unfortunately, he knew that to do "drugs" (i'm using their words, not my own) would compromise his career, but he did it anyway, & he did it in front of people who he didn't even know. even though the rules & laws about pot are outrageous, he probably shouldn't have ignored the fact that, for him, they still exist in a very real, very big way.
on the other hand, if he DOES lose his ability to compete, maybe he can come to this side of the fence & do something productive for pot smokers everywhere!

Uh-oh, someone likes to party and relax in their downtime from busting their ass to win 14 gold medals. Who gives a fuck, he's not hurting anyone and he's only doing what millions of americans do everyday. The only people who look down on this is the elitist, snobby, rich bastards who paid him to do commercials. I hope he stands up to the media because he has done nothing wrong.

He has had more than 1500 drug tests done and never failed.
Thats proof that the drug test are useless and infact a waste of money and time.
Marijuana is a great mind inhancer its a six sense which the advanced know how it works.

How sad to think that this american hero could lose everything for smoking some pot. This is a prime example of how ridiculous it is to continue treating marijuana as a drug thats different from alcohol and cigs. Micheal Phelps along with every other adult that desides to smoke some harmless weed should never be stripped of there entire lively hood due to a little recreational fun. Fuck Pres. bush went to war and lied to the american public to do so and he's livin the life without any accountability for what his decisions have done. Bullshit!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care if the guy won all those medals. The average joe like us would get in trouble for something like this but I have a feeling its going to be swept under the rug for superstar Phelps. If he is going to run around a college campus and act like that he has it coming to him. He shouldn't think he is above the law.

Submitted by Anonymous () on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 08:34.

He could've been smoking tobacco out of the bong, your "average joe" wouldn't have his picture of smoking out of a bong be posted all over the internet.

Im one of those ppl who never thaught phelp's was a hero. What he did winning those medals was superhuman, but in my view that dos'nt make a man a hero.to be a hero u have to give of yourself to make the world a better place. That out of the way, he had a chance to go against the grain and not appologize for what millions of ppl do every day, and say to the public that he did nothing wrong. Instead he pussed out. if he didnt appologize for his behaviour he could have advanced the cause of legalization by leaps and bounds. You could argue that he has to protect his image to keep commpeting, but i firmly beleive if the olympic fago commitee did try to bann him from the sport he would receive enough public support that they would revervse there dicsion. Hell rember Ross the snowboarding bording dude who was stripped of his gold for testing positive for weed? in the end they gave him his medal back, in fact it helped him out putting him on talk shows like letterman and the like. On a more personal note , based on what i've seen of phelps( even before his "error in judgement") i always thaught he was a big douche.

Phelps

best comment on CBC's feedback section from Sharkcity...

Mayor Bloomberg NYC admitted he not only smoked but he enjoyed it as well. He's worth 20 billion now. Obama is president. Does anybody still believe the government lies that Cannabis makes you lazy and stupid? How many more people have to die from the drug war? Do we need another Al Capone to get these puritanical idiots in government to stop giving organized crime this great stream of income?

thankyou Shark

Hell yeah, Michael Phelps smokes weed! I like him even more, but everyone seems to have their panties in a wad about it! I don’t understand people, and I get really upset when I start to hear that something like this could possibly hurt his career, after we ALL cheered for him to win all those gold medals, what was it like eight? I think that alone deserves a nice fat bong hit. Hitting the bong is my favorite way to smoke my lovely plant. Next would be is rolling joints, and or blunts. Really, I’ll smoke weed anyway, I wonder what kind of weed an Olympic gold medal winner smokes? It’s gotta be the sticky icky! Hey Michael hit me up if you ever come to D-town. www.thegreenreefer.com I got a couple of water pipes we can smoke that good stuff out of. Well Michael sorry to hear this man, don’t let what all these closed minded dumb asses keep you from enjoying the plant. The man and his man made laws are the one that is coming down on you, not the plant. All right I said my piece. FREE MICHEAL PHELPS and LEGALIZE IT! Now what was I doing? Oh yeah, smoking!

Poster boy

This guy is screwing up he's a kiss ass. He's already appolegized for his actions saying he made a big mistake. The guy is a world champion in swimming and he gets popped burning. What does he do? Kiss ass. If he had any balls he would of said hey people look at me, this is the new face of a stoner right above my 14 gold medals,I am not a slacker, I am not stupid, I am educated very smart and until our country wises up and legalizes marijuana, we will continue to be in a economic slump. As for his sponsers screw them too, they cant take away the money he already has or who he is, and what he's accomplished. But no he decides to kiss ass like a push over pussy that cares more about his endorsements than our cause. F#*K him and anyone else who takes the appoligy route to dealing with getting popped. Worst of all it was one of his chums that took the picture. That's just great. Keep in mind people think about the clowns your hanging out with, and wether their worthy of your cause, no matter who you are.

Phelps & Pot

I say if ANYONE drops Phelps as an endorser because he smoked pot we boycott their products. We should flex a muscle and the muscle attached to the wallet hurts most for these people. (And what better time to do it? In a time of financial "make it or die" the scales can tip with nothing more than a breath.) Who's with me!?!
If we could muster this level of oneness we can make things happen. If nothing else we can get the media attention. We need nonviolent news time.
If the "far right" can do it to make us do what they want why can't we do it right back?

Give up MSM

Two airplanes crash into two buildings and three buildings fall at free fall speed killing 3000+ people and Main Stream Media says that's OK but the important story of the day is Michael takes a hit off a bong.
You guys should just give up -- PLEASE.

Where do all the odd socks go?

I’ve known about hemp for thirty-six years,
A combustible product, which for me holds few fears,
It’s hard to abuse it so why can’t we use it,
If we look at the subject the answer appears.

We’re discussing a plant referred to as weed
Which since time immemorial has helped with our need
For feeding, clothing, housing, mirth
One of the myriad of flora that grow on our earth
Natural products confounded by greed.

When oil was discovered the gold rush began,
Liquid assets, easy money, the crudity soon ran
In profusion to power our lights and our lives
But conflict with old resources brought out the knives
Which cut out plantations formerly needed by man.

The best ships rope was made from the stuff
Fibre, linen and paper so tough
It would last near forever
But opposers were clever
And brought legislation of which we’ve had enough.

Hypocrisy lies in the stuff that we drink,
Beers, wines and spirits, what should one think?
Well alcohol sterilizes, thins out the blood,
Consumed in profusion, turns brain cells to mud!

Tobacco’s poisonous and it’s legal too
Nicotine hardens arteries and tar’s like glue
To the membranous tissue
Causing mucous issue
But it’s legal says the eagle; you can choose what to do.

So in a weird world of vested interest
We don’t necessarily have access to what would be best
For our needs and our health
Which is natural wealth
It’s more about money, how to feather one’s nest.

So how could we tax it?
Well as paper we could fax it,
Or lend it or spend it.
It would fill farmers fields with suitable yields,
Set aside turned into adaptable crops,
Environmental products filling the shops.

New technology applied to old green grass
And maybe we’d even be able to pass
The peace pipe around as old Indians did,
Medicinal applications would also get rid
Of addictive chemicals, prescriptions untold
Whose full side effects are yet to unfold?

So let’s legalise cannabis, “Free up the Weed”,
Giving the police the time that they need
To eradicate vending of synthetics like crack
And the human misery brought on by smack
The underworld system that thrives on such crap
Needs to be exiled, then chucked off the map.
Radical measures for radical ends
Are needed now to make amends
For mistakes of the past
Bringing sanity at last
To a subject of much contention
Brought about by mans’ invention
Of complicated chemical solutions,
They’re pollutive mass-produced ablutions
Like nylon from plastic from chemicals from oil
Because of its’ structure, it’ll sit in the soil
And millions of odd socks, lost every day
Made from those fibres just won’t rot away
And wherever they are and whatever they do
They bear a fatal testimony to---
The lack of green policy throughout most nations
And the material age and its’ creations….

I like Michael Phelps more now then I ever did, his marijuana use is surprising but thats his choice. It's just sad to see him have to say sorry for his harmless actions. The real harm ( For the Drug Czars )is his actions go against every piece of drug propaganda out there. According to this propaganda Michael "THE DRUG USER" Phelps should be in no condition to be swimming, let alone be winning. By all accounts he is the best swimmer in the world and maybe even of all time, but lets make a big fucking deal of him smoking marijuana. So I am sorry to all those "winners" and non-tokers who just found out that "DRUGS" like marijuana may not be as detrimental to your health as their government has led them to believe. Just keep sticking to your beliefs in safe drugs that the FDA allows for day consumption, like your pharmaceuticals, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and sugar. These drugs have no detrimental effects to your health assoicated with them (FDA Lies), have never killed anyone (Bullshit), and have a lot of profit assoicated with them (The only thing that matters).

I have to admit, I am a pothead. But i do not think that makes me any less of a person. I have attended top shelf schools, I even went to a top 50 school, I don't go there anymore the people sucked. But the point is i have smoked since my freshman year of high school and i am doing fine. i also know a lot of people that smoke every day of their life and got over a 33 on their ACT. And they say that pot fucks up your brain and body. Well Bill Clinton proved the brain part wrong and MICHAEL PHELPS the body part. Shit if some one can still smoke and have the record for the most gold medals and what not some people need to wake up and think " hey maybe it isnt so bad"

Michael if you read this keep doing what you do. and keep lighting that bong up.
and if you are ever in the midwest. just shake.
