Light for seedlings

How much do seedlings need?

What is the proper amount of light for a seedling indoors?

Seedlings should receive a light input of 30 to 60 watts per square foot, close to or equal to the light input a larger plant receives. Some people start their seedlings under fluorescents and then transfer them to stronger lights. I think this practice stresses the plants when they are transferred.

Seedlings which receive low light levels grow long thin stems. Plants growing under adequate light grow sturdy stems which support subsequent growth.
