Hemp research continues in Australia, with a variety of experimental and small-scale trials planned for this season. Hemp researcher Dr Andrew Katelaris told Cannabis Culture about "the difficulty of adapting existing fibre cultivars to relatively more equatorial latitudes, and the unfortunate influence that United States drug policy has in this country."

Stephen Bacon, a legal Canadian medical marijuana user, continues to be harassed over his medical marijuana (see CC#27, Pot-parents lose their kids). Because the federal government refuses to supply medical marijuana patients with cannabis, the most legal way they can acquire it is if they grow it themselves. If they buy it from a friend, they put that friend at risk of prosecution.

Canada's Senate has launched a special committee to "reassess Canada's anti-drug legislation and policies," and is set to begin hearing testimony in mid-October.
A Senate press release stated that the committee would "consult the Canadian public, disseminate adequate and objective information, study solutions developed by other countries, and make recommendations for an anti-drug strategy that will truly reflect the values of Canadian society."

DEA burns Sioux hemp

On August 24, armed DEA and FBI agents destroyed an acre and a half of hemp in the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, two days before it was to be harvested.
The hemp was planted by Alex White Plume on his farm in May 2000. The Oglala Sioux Nation tribal council had passed an ordinance in July 1998 that authorized the growing of hemp with a THC level under 1% by weight.?White Plume said officers told him tests had confirmed that his plants held less than 1% THC.

David MacMillan, whose dog Squirt was shot and killed by police during a Winnipeg marijuana raid netting only a tiny amount of cannabis (see CC#20, Pigs kill dogs), had his charges of possession stayed on July 4.
"I'm selling t-shirts," MacMillan said. "They say 'In memory of Squirt, shot by the police for 2 grams of pot!'"

Yes. Then either the clone or the plant can be forced to flower. The clone and the plant will have the exact same genetics and will react similarly to the environment. Eventually they will yield the same type of bud.

Equatorial varieties, which receive about 12 hours of darkness all year, use other cues as well as light regime to determine flowering and ripening time. They seem to respond to increasing dryness and cooler temperatures as well.

Hawaii's pot-copters grounded

Hawaii's Operation Green Harvest helicopter marijuana eradication program was forced to return a $265,000 federal DEA grant because of political pressure.
Activist Roger Christie launched impeachment proceedings against County Councillors last year, alleging the officials were guilty of "malfeasance" for not conducting a mandatory review of the eradication program. Although the case was eventually dismissed, city officials were forced to pay their own legal fees.

Hempfest brutality in Washington DC

Miriam White, star of Cannabis Culture's Pot-TV network and a senior staffer with the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), organized DC's contribution to the millennium marijuana march held that day in 80 cities around the world.
White had no permits, funding or logistical support, but still drew several hundred people to a tree-shaded area next to the US capitol building.
