(Article originally ran in CC #16, Jan/Feb 1999) Marc Emery is Canada's most well-known marijuana activist. He came to Vancouver in 1994, and immediately opened Hemp BC, which has grown into a world-famous marijuana and hemp superstore. In the following three years Marc also founded the Hemp BC Legal Assistance Centre, the Little Grow Store, the Cannabis Cafe, and Cannabis Culture Magazine.

Cannabis is becoming big business in Germany, and the ongoing success of the Cannabusiness trade show is proof of that. All aspects of cannabis are represented at the conference organized by Tritec, from hemp fashions and new hempen products to grow lights, a wide variety of bongs and paraphernalia, and cannabis magazines.

In last issue's editorial I complained about the tribulations of producing this magazine, and the lack of support we receive from some hemp stores and other businesses. I received a great deal of positive feedback to that editorial from readers and my peers within this movement. Some readers sent us sympathetic letters and cheques (bless you all), while many more said "I am low on cash but want to help.

The Club was founded by Jeff Jones, 24, as a bicycle powered medical delivery service in 1995. By the time it closed its Broadway office in downtown Oakland, it served 2,200 medical patients.

Hemp vs marijuana?

Hello Dana,

Just a short note to say you got your pollen yields all screwed up. (CC#13, Will hemp ruin marijuana?) First of all, is the yield 120 metric tons or 55,000 pounds for a 10 hectare field? It makes a big difference because 120 metric tons is 120,000 kilos, or about 250,000 pounds.

West Coast pot culture got a boost from the literary world this September, when Michael Poole's novel "Romancing Mary Jane" hit the stands. The book tells the true experiences of Poole's efforts to grow marijuana outdoors on BC's Sunshine Coast. A retired documentary filmmaker, Poole decided to leave Vancouver and enjoy the simplicity of nature, as well as making huge profits with a marijuana garden.
