The party will allow cannabis to be sold from high street shops, and spend the tax raised from sales on public health efforts in a policy which is bound to cause controversy.
Tim Farron’s party will be the first major UK political party to fight an election on a platform of legalising the drug for over 18s.
However, cannabis is currently being legalised in countries across the world including Uruguay and several US states have allowed weed to be sold commercially, bringing in billions of tax dollars.
Under the Lib Dem proposals the sale of marijuana would be fully legalised, with the quality strictly regulated to reduce harmful chemicals and sales restricted to over-18s.
