Liberals on Offensive Over Support to Legalize Marijuana

The Liberal Party blitzed an email to thousands of party supporters and members last Friday, arguing the Conservative position in favor of maintaining criminal laws prohibiting marijuana possession will only prop up a regime that has failed to keep teenagers from using cannabis, while evidence in the U.S. over the past year shows legalization works.

Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals are taking the offensive following sustained Conservative attacks over his support for the legalization of marijuana.

The Liberal Party blitzed an email to thousands of party supporters and members on Friday, arguing the Conservative position in favour of maintaining criminal laws prohibiting marijuana possession will only prop up a regime that has failed to keep teenagers from using cannabis, while evidence in the U.S. over the past year shows legalization works.

The email cited a 2013 UN study that found Canada led the developed world in the number of teenagers who use cannabis, 28 per cent, and called the figure a “shocking statistic.”

Conservatives have cited the same UNICEF report, but have claimed it is as evidence criminal sanctions against marijuana possession are required.

The Liberal email, on the other hand, said the report “clearly demonstrates how the Conservative government’s continued prohibition of the substance is failing to keep pot out of the hands of Canadian youth.”
