Drug War Rages On the Edge of Mexico City

For all the murderous mayhem that has haunted Mexico in recent years, its capital city has remained essentially untouched.

Large cities like Monterrey and Ciudad Juarez have become synonymous with brutal drug war killings, while Mexico City’s nearly 9 million residents have been largely spared.

But recent carnage in Mexico state, enveloping the capital like a folded tortilla, has many worried that’s about to change.

Gangland slaughter on the fringes of Mexico’s capital has claimed some 60 lives in 10 days, mocking President Enrique Pena Nieto’s promise to reduce violence with better local law enforcement.

In response, federal and state officials have beefed up army patrols in the state’s largest cities, hard on the capital’s borders — and people are taking note.

Enrique can’t control the cartels, so he can’t control the violence. He can’t control and regulate the people and the businesses above ground, because they’re opaque, underground, so there is no legal recourse in the court system.

Mexico City, the capital, the federal government will be controlled by the cartels in how many years? What’s your best estimate? A narco-state right on your border, and you U.S. prohibitionists created it. It’s not being a good neighbor to occupy militarily. I wouldn’t characterize the United Mexican States as a narco-state right now. However, once the cartels control the federal government, I would.

What’s the percentage of profits made from marijuana leaving Mexico going to the U.S.? In how many years do you think marijuana will be legal in the U.S. anyway? Some 60,000 people are estimated to have been killed in the past 5 years or so in Mexico because of the illegality of drugs. Why waste the money on cannabis prohibition in those 10 years, say? Save the lives of the estimated number of Mexicans who will have died because of cannabis prohibition. Mexican lives count. They count! THEY COUNT!
