Much to the chagrin of the medical marijuana supporters who lined the street in front of Kent City Hall, the city council voted Tuesday night to ban medical marijuana dispensaries and collective gardens.
The supporters hoped to convince the council that medical marijuana is a necessary part of many people’s lives.
“Please don’t take away the medical marijuana,” said Michael Ranetta, who suffers from multiple sclerosis. “We need it, it’s safe and we don’t want to die on pain pill narcotics.”
Inside city hall, tempers flared as more than 150 people packed the small room to voice their opinion on the issue.
“All these dispensaries have helped many of us stay out of jail, because we have a place to go,” one man said.
Despite the emotional pleas from the public, the council voted 4-3 in favor of the ban.
