Kelly Kirby is a Health Canada legal marijuana marijuana patient. She was stupidly evicted by her landlord when City of St. Catharines slapped a work order on her rental residence because building inspectors learned there was medicinal marijuana grow-op.
The landlord responded to the work order by changing the locks on her door. Essentially locking her out! As someone who successful grew marijuana in the Garden City, it doesn’t surprise me a landlord would change locks on their rental as a response to a work order. Kirby bravely established Kamp Kirby at the downtown courthouse. The one I was at in January.
Her efforts were working. Media were covering her story. Getting under the skin of prosecutors who asked police to remove her seven days later, Monday, July 4. Friends and supporters expressed concern for her well being. She wasn’t sleeping or eating. Kelly is not a young women. She, and many, many medicinal marijuana users, should not be front line weed warriors. Yet routinely they are. As someone who’s been evicted twice for growing marijuana, I understand the incredible stressors of suddenly being made homeless. They’ve taken a toll on this stellar person. She’s been admitted to hospital because people are concerned for her well being. Kelly Kirby needs much rest, but there’s plenty of able young activists just angling for adventure. It’s going to take sometime to solve this mess. A return date is set for Aug.
Until then should we re-establish Kamp Kirby in front of the courthouse? I have a pretty good understanding on how to get a rotating camp out going. It’s a quiet safe community. Most of the businesses downtown would be happy to see the influx of visitors. Getting out of Toronto’s hot muggy weather is probably enough to get people interested.
On a super pot positive note, two great rallies happened this weekend. Peterborough, ON celebrated Cannabis Day July 1st with 200 plus people. That’s a great number of people for their small community. The organizers are really stoked about their efforts. I’m tentatively scheduled for a July 23 appearance at downtown retro clothing store. I attended teh Oshawa, ON rally July 2 with plenty of activists. No arrests at either protest.
