Big Marijuana Busts are a Big Waste of Money

There are news stories reporting massive grow-op busts in Chilliwack, outside of Vancouver, BC. I had to respond to the propaganda, and I hope you write letters to media as often as possible too! Here’s my Letter to the Editor (and also to the authors of the two articles in the Vancouver Sun).

Massive grow-ops like the ones busted recently in Chilliwack and all across Canada on a regular basis would cease to exist if the plants could be legally grown outdoors. Because of prohibition, grow-ops are hiding marijuana indoors, booby traps are set to prevent theft, police hours and paychecks are super-inflated at a cost to taxpayers, and drug-selling gangsters control the market.

The federal government’s continued prohibition of cannabis causes more harm than does the substance itself. That was the conclusion after intense and thorough study on the topic by the Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs in 2002. The police had their say then, as they always do (our Solicitor General, Kash Heed, even testified), but it’s abundantly clear that our ineffective drug laws waste money and destroy lives.

Even worse, gangsters are making enormous amounts of money thanks to the federal government’s continued prohibition, a policy that inflates the price and demand for marijuana.

It’s clear that anyone who supports prohibition is supporting organized crime. After all, would you prefer legitimate business control the market, or gangsters? Prohibition didn’t work for alcohol, and it isn’t working for drugs.
