Georgia Lawmaker Calls For Caning, Executing Marijuana Offenders

State Republican lawmaker Tommy Benton (31st House District) favors “caning” minor marijuana offenders and “executing” those who sell the drug, according to a recent correspondence sent by the representative to a constituent.

In a July 29, 2009 e-mail (which was voluntarily forwarded to the NORML office), Rep. Benton wrote: “Thanks for the email. We will have to agree to disagree on this and whether or not money is wasted (by mandating the state to prosecute minor marijuana offenders). I am opposed to the legalization of marijuana. I think we should go to caning for people caught using and maybe execute dealers. [emphasis NORML’s]That would solve the problem as well. That is what they do in Singapore and they don’t have a drug problem.”

Caning is a form of corporal punishment consisting of up to 24 violent lashes with a long rattan cane that has been soaked in water. The procedure inflicts intense pain and deep, bloody lacerations that can take several months to heal.

Rep. Benton followed up his remarks in a separate e-mail on August 11 (also forwarded to NORML) in which he threatened to turn over the names of citizens who disagreed with his political viewpoints to local law enforcement.

He wrote: “You and your cronies want it (marijuana) legalized so you can get a hit anytime without having to worry about getting arrested. I have forwarded your email to the Lowndes County sheriffs [sic]office so that they can be on the lookout for you. [emphasis NORML’s]Consider this my last correspondence on the the [sic]subject to you or anyone else who shares your similar “conservative views’.”

Benton was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2005.

FUCK BENTON!!
I HOPE THE FUCKER DIES HORRIBLY WITHOUT PAIN MEDICATION IN THE STREETS OF GEORGIA!!!!!!

I agree with you, this has to be motivated by money. I can’t see anyone being as ignorant as this guy, he probably just says this stuff to piss people off and then laughs about it with all his money. What a good scam he has going.

So he wants to kill people who sell a flower? Then he is a murderer. He doesn’t have to do the killing himself to be guilty of it. He said he wished for it to happen, and that’s bad enough. Who voted for this guy? Vote him out instead!

The following may be the rant/ramblings of a drunk man but bear with me.
When our fore fathers signed the legislation that started this country they called for the seperation of church and state. Well with almost every member of congress and those in political power being supported and funded by corperations and special intrest groups, i propose that we seperate business intrests from political agendas. On second thought this doesn’t seem like an achevible goal and this isn’t the best place to write this in. But could someone try and write this out better for me if you understand what i’m trying to say?

    Hey Benton
Didn’t you know that people who smoke marijuana become totally insensible to pain.So your caning would have no effect.
Seriously, for politicians like you who open their mouth too much, we should call the cleaner.

It is a very sad thing indeed that, the human mind has been so abused, abused to the point in which these individuals that are in control can’t see the people they serve as human beings, everything to them is a mathematical equations (what will get me money x how much I get / what I lose in exchange for the money) now someone like us will say that harming a person to get something is wrong because we deal on a micro level where we interact with the people we’re hurting and experience the consequences of that, these government figures deal with people on the macro level so instead of dealing with individual people they deal with populations of people and thus dissociate themselves from them. Now these figureheads deep inside are broken, they can’t live with themselves and they are definitely not happy, they are asleep, like most of the population, existing in a dream world unconscious of the effects of their actions or even the true motives behind them. They fear most of all the death of consumption, when they stop spending their money and using physical objects to distract themselves, they cannot live with the person they are inside, their flaws, their insecurities, their failings all unaccepted and horribly painful, mmmmm to be human, we are all like this all the time that is why these laws still exist because none of us possess the frame of mind that is strong enough to resist the constant flow of fractured logic and unconscious suggestions. If we want to change anything about our world, instead of writing on forums and bitching about peoples mistakes either of character or judgment, close your eyes and go inside yourself and correct your own improper behaviors toward fellow sentient beings, create within yourself a sanctuary where the messages from the media and our cultural network are no longer the main decider of your behavior. These people in power will never be perfected unless we raise the standards we ask of ourselves because if we all expect someone else to be the one to save the day then we’ll all suffer greatly because there will be no one who is awake. And without an awakened state of mind, you are a zombie and what to power hungry money grubbing politions love a person that is so blind to their experience that they can be told what to like when to like it and how much to pay for liking it. Until you wake up for real your opinions mean nothing.

The man is completely irrational and is entirely out of line. It is disgusting to hear such inhumane comments. Why does he hate cannabis so much?
