A study at the University of Milan showed that cannabidiol (CBD), a relatively non-psychoactive constituent of cannabis, can prevent damage caused by lack of oxygen to the brain.
The study, published in the July issue of the journal Neuroscience, involved suffocating gerbils for 10 minutes, thereby inducing brain damage from lack of oxygen. Different amounts of CBD were then given to the gerbils five minutes after they were allowed to breathe again. The greater the amount of CBD given, the better the eventual recovery of the tortured gerbils.
