Drug tests and fresh pot

Can smelling growing marijuana cause a person to fail a drug test? I am not referring to second-hand smoke, but the odor of the growing plant.

The odors from growing marijuana are not cannabinoids. They are monoterpenes and diterpenes, flavinoids similar in chemistry to many other plant odors. When you smell them you are not coming in contact with THC or similar compounds, so it would have no effect on a drug test.

Second-hand marijuana smoke does contain THC, so a very sensitive test will pick up THC from second-hand smoke. Tests are usually calibrated to have a higher threshold of detection and avoid the confusion regarding sidestream contact.
