Perlite alone?

Can perlite be used by itself in a passive hydroponic system?
Jim Dean,

No, because perlite does not exhibit capillary action. Since it does not draw water up from a reservoir, it cannot be used alone. However, it can be used as a component of a planting mix containing vermiculite, peat moss, coir, compost or nylon fiber.

Wrong answer. Many people grow using ‘hempy’ buckets filled with nothing but perlite and the results are on par or better than some of those achieved using DWC and other hydroponic methods.
