Sacramental pot setback

On Friday, May 16, a US magistrate told a federal court that it should not listen to Tom Brown’s appeal for religious freedom to use cannabis under the First Amendment. Tom Brown, the founder of the psychedelic-using Our Church, was thrown in jail for 10 years in 1995 for growing sacramental cannabis and peyote on his Arkansas farm.
Since then, Brown’s sentence has been reduced to five years, and he is presently out on two years of supervised release. Regardless, he is still fighting what he sees as an unjust application of the law. Brown’s latest court appearance is his second attempt to have the courts recognize his religious rights. A similar appeal by Brown was rejected in 1995.
