Felony Charges In Sweden For Drug-Free Hemp Products

Stockholm 8/5/2000
Thomas G, the owner of the Swedish company Psychedelic Bookstore was raided by police with a search warrant on April 7 and held in a police custody for 12 days.

His company sells mainly books about entheogens and the psychedelic experience (books which are perfectly legal in Sweden), but as Psychedelic Bookstore is also active in the pro-hemp movement they also have sold items such as Swiss Cannabis Pastilles and the German product “Knaster Hanf” which is a smoking mixture based on THC free hemp. None of these products are psychoactive drugs in any sense of the word, but they do contain non-active material from the cannabis plant.

This was considered enough for the prosecutor to charge Thomas with an aggravated offence against Swedish narcotics law, which carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 2 years and a maximum of up to 10 years.

As well as selling books and drug-free hemp products Thomas is also the most active and high profile member of the Swedish legalization movement. There is therefore serious concern that the raid and arrest was not due to misunderstanding, but was politically motivated.
