In the US, statistics show that there were 682,885 marijuana arrests in 1998, of which over 600,000 were for simple possession.
According to the Marijuana Policy Project, this is more arrests than for murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault combined. They also claim that there are 59,300 marijuana offenders currently in US prisons.
