Ann Landers and Dear Abby on pot

In her January 5 column, Ann Landers came out in favour of marijuana law reform. In response to an impassioned plea from a mother whose “good kid” got busted for possession of pot, Ann wrote “I have long believed that the laws regarding marijuana are too harsh. Those who keep pot for their own personal use should not be treated as criminals. A long stay in prison makes no sense whatsoever.”

On March 1, Ann’s real-life sister of Dear Abby fame also printed a lengthy letter about the damage done by the war on drugs. Abby herself wrote “I agree that marijuana laws are overdue for an overhaul. I also favour the medical use of marijuana ? if it’s prescribed by a physician. I cannot understand why the federal government should interfere with the doctor-patient relationship, nor why it would ignore the will of a majority of voters who have legally approved such legislation.”
