Wildly Weedy Reality Series
In February 2005, I announced a new idea with Marc Emery on my Pot-TV show. We called it The Contest. The rules were simple: “Send Us Your Weed”!
We decided to film the smoke-off and put it all on Pot-TV.net so the contestants could see their entries and what we thought of them. Marc with his Prince of Pot bong, Chris Bennett and his beloved Volcano, and I with Vogue rolling papers on hand would smoke and rate the samples, and declare a winner. Fabulous prizes for the top ten finishers ranged from trips to the Tokers Bowl, to Volcano vaporizers, Bubble Bags, books, and pipes. The contestants didn’t have to grow the pot, just send it in. But would they? And more importantly, would the pot get through?
The first entry arrived just days after the announcement. They were pristine buds in glass jars, simply packed in a box and mailed from Texas. No stealth was used. This was a good sign! From there, it was like somebody left the garden gate open and weed began to pour in from all over Canada, the U.S. and even one from England. The three judges, Kaara our scorekeeper, a skeleton video crew, and assorted guests would gather after work hours and smoke ten entries – “overtime,” if you will. Only we were getting paid bud and a half.
The weed that was entered was mostly very good. Many buds were excellent. Some were indoor, some outdoor, from a wide range of growing experiences and conditions. With strains like Blueberry, SAGE, New York City Diesel, Skunk #1, White Widow, Haze, Lavender, KC 36, Kush, Power Plant – the list read like an Amsterdam coffeeshop menu. More than half of the entries were grown from seeds purchased from Marc Emery Direct, which was very exciting for us, as we got to see the seed-to-bud process come full circle.
Our original intention was not only to judge the entries based on flavor, how they smoked and were prepared, but also to really try and see what the high was like and how long it lasted. But the problem wasn’t whether the high would last – it was whether or not we could last! Smoking 10 joints isn’t at all an unusual occurrence around here. I easily do that every day. But to smoke 10 more after a long day at work, and to stretch each sample out over several hours was about to make Jack a pretty dull boy. So we abandoned the notion of trying to detect the length of high after the first session. It was either that, or we’d never come down.
Our technical producer and video editor did a fantastic job of keeping everything “straight” by cataloguing, photographing and keeping the running totals of all of the entries. His masterful editing was a fine tribute to everyone who sent in his or her weed. Without him I don’t think we could have pulled it off. Oh, we would have smoked all the entries ourselves, but I doubt we could have figured out who won in the end!
There are many questions as to whether or not one can actually determine which pot is the best. Much has to do with the individual who is smoking, combined with the setting, and about one million other growing considerations. I don’t think this or any other contest can ever narrow it down to just one strain, but in my experience it is actually possible to rate these one against another. Each joint I smoked would give me a different high. I was either instantly more stoned than I was before, or not. I would be higher, or more laid back than I was before, and the flavors and how it smoked were either better or worse than the others. While The Contest continued, the cream of the crop would assuredly rise to the top.
As the entries continued to pour in, we had to keep getting a bigger box. Very quickly we realized that we had more entries than we could smoke in only a few episodes. Over time, The Contest turned into 12 shows of at least one hour each, as 142 weed entries arrived, over one pound of pot!
But smoking only 10 a week was not making a dent in the mountain of pot we had, and time was beginning to run out. So we stepped up the proceedings to 2 sessions a week. We also did a couple of on-the-fly episodes to pick up the slack, concluding in 2 final monster efforts where we smoked 18 in one show.
As the final tally was made, the top two strains tied with a score of 13.6 out of a possible 15. First Place came from Mr. Green Genes in Tennessee, with Southern Afghani. This grew out of a Nirvana Seeds Indoor Mix, so the strain is unknown. The smoke was a very strong Indica, with a fruity flavor. The other top contender was Early Wonder Skunk from Solar Warrior Seeds, which we had always known as an early finishing outdoor strain, but this was grown indoor and was truly wonderful to smoke. It had an earthy, spicy flavor, with a very strong high.
Finishing 1/10 of a point behind were 2 more strains from our seed catalogue. Afghan Dream entered by Little Big Way came from the British Columbia Seed Co. and was magnificently grown. It was hashy with a smooth laid-back high. The other was KC 36 entered by BabaKu. This was outstanding. It had a full lemony Thai flavor, with a crisp “up” Sativa high. Rounding out the top 10 were Sage, Amnesia Haze, Organic Hempstar, KC33, Yoda, and Mazar. All were stunning, very well grown, and could have easily won. In fact, more than half of the entries finished less than one point behind the winners.
No one could have predicted that we were creating the biggest pot competition the world has ever seen, and we can’t thank the participants enough for joining in. Your efforts along with our crew here made this a truly unforgettable experience. It gave proof to the fact that you are watching Pot TV, and we are each in our own way overgrowing the government. One entry came in that was grown 20 miles from George W. Bush’s ranch – how cool is that?
As for Marc, Chris and I... well, we learned a lot about running a cannabis competition of this magnitude. It’s just tough to remember what it was!
Peace and Pot!
